When he glances at me, it’s with a razor-thin smile. “Jealous?”

I blink away the image of Rook, naked, in a bed littered with whores. It’s hard to stop imagining him…hard.

“No,” I lie.

“But you’re wrong. An incubus isn’t welcome at any brothel. Not as a client.”

I arch my eyebrows. “No one will fuck you?”

“You keep begging me to.”

My startled gasp breaks into a laugh. I can’t help myself. “Goddamn.”

“Am I wrong?” Rook’s smile widens into a smirk.

My fingernail clinks on the collar. “The aellurium makes it slightly harder to kill you, so I’m trying to seduce my way out of captivity.”

“Escape won’t be that easy.”

But I’m too far gone for escape to be enough. The feral urge to claim him pounds inside me with every heartbeat. Even though he’s a forbidden temptation with an untouchable body, I’m tempted to claw the clothing from his skin.

“Set me free,” I purr, “and I can keep you warm at night.”

He scoffs. “By burning me alive.”

“I don’t kill every man I meet.”

“Should I ignore the heap of bones outside your cave?”

I glare at him. “Dragonslayers.”

He shrugs and keeps walking, his leather armor creaking slightly. I tug the woolen cloak closer around my skin. Unspent desire still simmers inside me, an ever-present irritation. I force myself to focus on the cold wind on my skin.

“Would you have killed me?” I ask. “If you didn’t need me alive?”

He glances back just long enough to frown. “Why?”

“Gold.”

He dips his head, a crease between his eyebrows. “You already asked me this. I don’t want the bounty on your head.”

“But you are a bounty hunter?”

“More of a monster hunter.”

“Last time I checked, I was a monster.”

Rook shakes his head. “You haven’t been devouring babies or destroying castles, and you set only one village on fire.”

My eyebrows shoot skyward. “You know about that?”

“Your bounty posters ranked it high on your list of crimes,” he says mildly.

Remembered shame twists my guts. Once, I called that village home. “They didn’t say why I burned it down?”

“On a bounty poster? Why would they?”

“To make people hate me more.”
