“Tell me the truth, Rook. What’s behind the lock?”

He clears his throat. “Lark.”

“A bird?”

“A woman.”

Jealousy strikes me like lightning. “So that’s why you refused me.”

“Incorrect. I may be a demon, but I’m not interested in my sister.”

“Your sister?” Damn, I shouldn’t feel so relieved.

“Yes.” He exhales hard. “Locked away in the worst dungeon in the kingdom.”

“Where?”

“The Forgotten Tower, on an island in the Silver Sea.”

My eyebrows shoot skyward. “That sounds pleasant,” I say, with false enthusiasm. “Why was Lark imprisoned?”

“She betrayed Queen Dulcamara.”

“Well, fuck. That sounds dangerous.”

“Only you can melt the lock.”

“Why me?”

“It had to be you.”

“You couldn’t find another dragon?”

“I found you.” The velvety rasp in his voice isn’t helping me concentrate.

“Your mistake.”

“Pyrah, I need you. Free me.”

“No.” I stare down at him, kneeling at my feet. “And you can’t demand anything from me. You’re at my mercy now.”

He twists his mouth into a grim smile. “What will you do with me?”

“Whatever I want.”

He bows his head. “Decide quickly. Before I bleed to death.”

Crimson soaks through the bandage on his thigh, but I narrow my eyes. “You aren’t bleeding that much.”

He grunts, then lifts his head. His eyes gleam in the darkness.

“I have a request,” he says in that stony rasp of his. “Let me feed from you.”

I jerk back as if he’s already touching me. “Feed? You mean…?”

“One night with an incubus.”

A sharp gasp escapes me. Is he taunting me? Mocking how much I want him?
