“Are…are yourejectingme?”

His head snaps up. “I could have killed you!” He grits out the words.

“And I could have killedyouthe moment you released me. But I didn’t burn you to ashes, did I? Because I wanted you.”

Bitterness twists his mouth. “Because you had no one else.”

It hits me like a slap. “Don’t you dare pity me.”

My legs trembling, I brace myself on the wall and pull myself up. He reaches for me but stops short when I glare at him.

“Lie down,” he says. “God, woman, let me take care of you.”

He’s never called mewomanbefore. It’s strangely endearing. My traitorous knees shake beneath me until I lock them. Damn it, I hate feeling so weak. Before I fall down, I sit down. I clench the blanket in my fists.

“The only one who takes care of me is myself.” I meant to throw it back in his face, but it comes out as a hoarse whisper. “No one else gives a fuck.”

“Wrong. I give a fuck.”

“Because you need me for my dragonfire.”

“I can’t deny why I captured you, but that’s not why I kept you.”

“Kept? Like I’m your prize?” I refuse to admit how much that flatters my greedy, gold-hoarding heart.

“No.” His throat works as he swallows hard. “Like you’re my prey.”

“The prey of an incubus?”

“I failed to resist my most primitive urges.”

I laugh recklessly. “You and me both.”

A tendon tightens in his jaw as if he’s gritting his teeth. “Fuck, Pyrah. I captured you and held you prisoner. I took advantage of you when you were in heat and desperate to be fucked, and then Ihurtyou.”

“Desperate?” My pulse pounds behind my eyes. “You think I would have fucked the first man to jam his cock in me?”

“No, but you must know that this was a mistake.”

His words pile up inside me like stones weighing me down. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize to me.I’mthe mistake. You’re…you’re innocent.”

“I’m so tired of you treating me like an innocent virgin! I’m a motherfucking dragon. I want to find a mate who’s my equal.”

“Will a male dragon claim you? Without you being a virgin any longer?”

I scoff to disguise my fear that I’m doomed to be alone. “What male dragon?”

“Whoever you choose. Have we ruined that future for you?”

“Don’t you think it’s a little late to be asking that question? Though any male who requires virginity isn’t worthy as my mate.”

He dips his head in a tense nod. “Understood.”

What if my equal isn’t a dragon at all, but a demon with ember eyes? What ifhe’sthe one I must choose as my mate?

No.
