“I’m always demonic.”

“You didn’t let out your wings or tail. Or your cock in all its demonic glory.”

His forehead furrows. “Do you require that from me?”

“Do you hide yourself all the time?”

He shakes his head. “It’s not under my control. Not completely. The demonic wings and tail require intense emotion…or immense arousal.”

“Were you less aroused?”

“No.” He shoulders open the door and steps outside with me. “I held back.”

“Because you were afraid?”

His arms tighten around me. “Because I never want to hurt you again.”

It’s impossible not to feel for him, but I know it’s too dangerous. “Don’t worry, you won’t break my heart. This is just sex.”

“Agreed.”

He puts me down in the courtyard, his face unreadable. I can almost convince myself that neither one of us cares.

“I promise I won’t fall in love with you.” I laugh to show him I’m joking.

“I will do my best to be unlovable.”

But I’ve lied to Rook, because I can’t deny the longing deep in my bones.

I’m afraid I’m doomed to break my promise to him.

CHAPTERTWENTY-THREE

While I wash myself in the abandoned royal baths, Rook kindles a campfire in the courtyard. By the time I return, he’s roasting a rabbit on a spit. Wind chills my wet hair. Shivering, I huddle by the fire to dry.

“Where are your clothes?” he asks.

“What clothes?”

He sighs. “You had a shirt, at least.”

“Yourshirt. I borrowed it.”

Rook glances heavenward as if seeking divine intervention. He returns to the throne room and fetches the forgotten shirt. When he tosses it to me, I catch it out of the air. I dress quickly, thankful for the extra warmth.

He watches me with a wry twist to his mouth. “As much as I enjoy seeing you naked, you need a wardrobe.”

“I need to shift into a dragon.” I tug at the chain around my neck. My stomach lurches. “I forgot to tell you.”

“Yes?”

“When you were out hunting, I saw a golden dragon.”

“Fuck.” He jabs the fire with a stick, rewarded by a rain of sparks. “How close? Were you seen?”

“He flew over the castle, but he didn’t see me.”

Rook glowers into the flames. “This isn’t good.”
