Scaldric swoops over Netherhaven and wings his way toward the sea. Waves roll into the crescent-shaped bay, embraced by the arms of cliffs. A sandy beach gleams in the moonlight. He tilts his wings and lands on the far western edge of the beach.

Ahead, a cave yawns in the cliffs.

When he puts me down, I dig my bare toes into the sand. “A sea cave?”

“Yes,” Scaldric says, “though the sea no longer reaches very far inside.”

Shivering, I hug myself tight. It’s cold here, in the middle of the night, and I’m not wearing anything beyond the shirt and trousers I borrowed from Rook.

“I’m freezing,” I say.

Scaldric folds his wing around my shoulder. Leathery against my bare skin, it blocks some of the wind from the sea. He guides me to the sea cave. Tide pools gleam near the mouth of the cave. My feet slip on the wet rocks.

“Let me carry you,” he says.

Scaldric shudders as he shifts into a man. Naked, he strides toward me with such determination that I back away from him on instinct. I lose my footing on a slick rock, but he catches me by my wrist before I can fall.

“Stop,” he says. “Before you hurt yourself.”

He might be attempting concern, but it sounds like disdain in his cold voice. Before I can protest, he hooks his arms under my legs and lifts me against his chest.

He glances into my eyes. “You’re not freezing. You’re burning up.”

I shiver. “But I feel so cold.”

“You must be feverish. How long have you been in heat?”

I shake my head, not wanting to admit that I didn’t know until I met Rook. Or that I fucked him more than once.

It wasn’t enough to bring me out of heat.

“You need to mate,” Scaldric says, his voice roughening with what might be lust.

“No. Not yet.”

“Soon.”

I shiver again, though this time it’s from anticipation.

Scaldric carries me deeper into the sea cave. The walls twist and ripple here, carved by waves long ago. It still smells like salt water. Faint moonlight trickles through the mouth of the cave and illuminates the interior. He has no treasure here, unlike a female dragon, since he would be winning my gold and territory by becoming my mate.

He lifts me onto a rocky ledge and climbs after me, the muscles in his arms and shoulders flexing. I drag my gaze away from his naked body. It’s dangerous to stare at him. There’s a bed on the ledge, or at least, a nest of furs.

“Does this please you?” he asks me.

Fuck, he’s getting hard.

He advances on me with dark eyes, his pupils blown by desire.

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

My pulse pounds between my legs. “What do you intend to do?”

“My intent should be clear.”

My gaze dips down before I can help myself. It’s impossible to ignore his arousal. “I haven’t agreed to anything.”

Scaldric arches his eyebrows. “Yet.”
