“I would never believe you are unworthy for not being able to father a child. That’s such a cruel way to judge a man for something that must be so painful.”

“It’s the truth,” he says, hoarsely.

“But you never asked me what I wanted. I knew you couldn’t get me pregnant.”

“You knew you could fuck me without consequences.”

“No,” I whisper. “I couldn’t.”

“What do you mean?”

“I couldn’t stop wanting more from you.”

When he lifts his face, his eyes glint with broken shards of hope. “Forgive me.”

I swallow past the ache in my throat. “No.”

“Pyrah.” Unbelievably, there’s even more gravel in his voice. “Please.”

“I deserve better than you. I deserve a man who will claim me as his mate. A man who understands me and trusts me.”

Rook braces himself with his knuckles on the ground. “I can be that man.”

I stare down at him, an exquisite agony in my heart. “It’s too late.”

“You don’t have to choose Scaldric.”

“I don’t have to chooseyou.”

When he stands, he overshadows me in the moonlight. His wings unfurl from the darkness behind him, as glorious as the night sky. “Pyrah, I will do whatever it takes to prove myself worthy of you. I will conquer castles for you. Fight dragons for you. Because I’m not a man, I’m a monster.”

“Rook—” My voice breaks.

I can’t tear my eyes away from him. I want him so badly, but I can’t have him.

“I already surrendered to the golden dragon,” I say. “I can’t dream of a silver demon whenever I close my eyes.”

He clenches and unclenches his hands. “Are you rejecting me?”

“Rook, it’stoo late. You already rejected me as your mate. I had no choice but Scaldric, and I can’t betray him. Not even in my dreams.” I force myself to stare into his burning eyes. “Please, just let me sleep.”

Folding his wings along his spine, Rook backs away. “Understood.”

The demon breaks apart into ashes that disappear with the wind.

I’m left standing in the ruins of a place that will never be home again. Not knowing if I will ever be anything but unloved.

CHAPTERTWENTY-NINE

Iwake to Scaldric’s return.

The golden dragon looms over me as I lie in the nest of furs. It’s enough to kick my heartbeat into a gallop.

“Come with me,” he commands.

“Where are we going?” I ask with a raspy voice, as I blink the sleep from my eyes.

“To the castle.”
