“Can’t? He’s a cambion. He’d be utterly useless as your mate.”

I back away from him, retreating from his vicious words. “You’re wrong. I don’t need apregnancyto bring me out of heat.”

“Why else would you feel this compulsion to find a mate?”

My clenched throat throttles my breathing. “What if I can’t even get pregnant?”

“Impossible. You can’t be barren if you’re in heat.”

“How do I know this isn’t some bullshit you concocted?” I glare at him. “Are you telling me every single female dragon either gets pregnant or loses her mind?”

He shrugs. “Is the mating fever insanity?”

“Maybe.” I grimace. “I’ve heard of females driven wild by lust.”

“Satisfy your instincts, Pyrah. Believe the truth in your body.”

My body? It betrayed me with its most primitive urges and desires. I sink onto the edge of the bed. The weight of reality crushes me like a rockslide.

“This is my first heat.” I stare at the floor, my eyes unfocused. “I don’t know how I will endure this every year.”

“You won’t suffer it alone. You are mine.”

Scaldric kneels by me and kisses my forehead. His lips linger against my skin. My heartbeat hammers at his nearness. I curl my fingers into fists and resist the temptation to grab him. To fight him.

He glances into my eyes. “Sleep.”

“With you?”

His mouth hardens. “I won’t touch you tonight. Not while you’re still afraid of me. Understandably, after what you went through.”

“But tomorrow?”

“Yes. Our wedding night.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

Treasure glints in the darkness of my cave. The fire in my belly warms the coins beneath my scales. I arch my spine in an indulgent stretch before curling again.

From the shadows, a man walks, gold glinting in his fists.

Not a man. A demon.

“Rook.” His name escapes me as a growl. “Am I dreaming of you again?”

“Yes.”

Just that one word, in his gravel-rough voice, sends a ripple of desire through me. When he opens his hands, he’s not holding aellurium chains. He’s bringing me fistfuls of jewelry, glittering with gemstones.

“What do you want?” I demand.

“You.”

Anger and longing flow through me like molten gold. “Fuck you, Rook. You can’t invade my dreams and demand sex from me.”

“No!” He swallows hard, his throat bobbing. “No, that’s not why I’m here.”

Uncurling, I rise to my full height as a dragon. I tower over him with my wings flared. “Why did you bring me gold? Did you think you could buy my body like I’m a whore?”
