He bends down and kisses me on the mouth. It’s a long, slow kiss, and it tastes sweeter than nectar. I melt in his embrace. Though it’s not the devouring kiss of an incubus, he leaves me trembling and giddy.

His eyebrows angle in a frown. “I can’t let Scaldric force you into marriage. Unless…”

“Unless?”

“You choose him.”

It’s as if a fist tightens around my stomach. “I never should have surrendered to him. I don’t think he cares who I am, so long as I’m a female dragon. He claimed me at first sight. He thinks I need to get pregnant to end my heat.”

The muscles in Rook’s arms tighten. It must be involuntary. “Is that true?”

“I don’t know.” Doubts swarm through my mind. “Scaldric seems so confident.”

“I doubt he understands you better than you understand yourself.”

I twist my mouth in a smile. “And yet I’m still in heat.” Desire uncurls inside me. “Still distracted by lust.”

“You may need more time.”

“Time.” I snort. “You mean fucking?”

He shrugs. “That, too.”

I’m tempted to beg for him right now, but I need to keep my priorities straight.

“What happens after we wake?” I ask.

“I will find you. Wherever you are.”

“The castle at Netherhaven.”

He grimaces. “I haven’t been back to Netherhaven since…”

“Your father died?”

He dips his head. “Since Queen Dulcamara killed him. She won’t let me waltz back into the castle unchallenged.”

“Then don’t.”

His chin jerks up. “Why?”

“I won’t stay in Netherhaven.”

“They won’t let you leave.”

“I’m a dragon. It’s hard to stop me.”

His eyes glint with what might be admiration. “Scaldric is also a dragon. And Queen Dulcamara wants something from you. She won’t let you slip through her fingers.”

“What does the queen want from me?”

He shakes his head. “I don’t know. Nothing good.”

“I can go tonight. Meet me in the Thornwood at Hexfall.”

“And if you can’t?”

“Wait until midnight. Then—”
