“Before I was disinherited.”

He leaned back with his good arm draped over the seat. He had a casual arrogance that could only be described as royal.

“Fuck me,” I muttered.

“Pardon?” He had a wicked glint in his eyes.

“Nothing.” I grimaced. “What did you mean when you said your family flung you to the assassins?”

“The Order of the Asphodel is, above all else, a society of killers. My necromancy makes me invaluable to them. They first gave me the name the Prince of the Undying.”

“No wonder they want you back.”

“I don’t belong to them.”

I exhaled hard. “I don’t want to fight them. An ancient society of assassins sounds like a really bad day.”

“Ardis, do not doubt me. I promised you that I would protect you.”

Tension thickened the air between us.

When I stood, he followed suit. The train swayed along a curve in the tracks, and I stumbled against him. I braced myself with both hands on his chest. He had the unexpected scent of rain on pines.

“Ardis,” he said again, more gently.

He tilted his face as if he were a breath away from kissing me. His lips parted. His beautiful eyes smoldered with intensity.

Desire uncurled inside me. My heartbeat pounded between my legs.

A prince. I was touching a prince.

“I have no reason to trust you,” I said.

“Then I will win your trust.”

He sounded so earnest it scared me. He would never forget his vow of undying loyalty.

“Fuck.” I sank back onto my seat. “I never should have taken this job.”

“Why do you kill for profit?”

His question knocked me off balance. “I need the money. Not everyone can be fabulously wealthy. What’s your excuse?”

He shrugged. “I don’t get paid.”

“Killing is a labor of love?” That sounded much too callous, and I regretted it.

Icy emotion froze in his eyes. “A matter of survival.”

“Then we understand each other,” I said.

The cold in his eyes melted. He seemed to be studying my face, and I felt my cheeks betray me with a blush.

“You are more than simply a mercenary.”

“Are you more than a necromancer?”

He looked away. “I wish to be.”
