This time, he fucked me slowly, at an indulgent pace to match the luxury around us. When he wrung yet another climax from me, bliss obliterated all thought. He kissed me hard and relinquished his control.

The full force of his necromancy hit me as he came. His cock throbbed inside me as his magic rushed as deep as my bones. The raw intimacy of it brought tears to my eyes. I closed them tight and clung to him.

“Ardis,” he murmured. “Are you crying?”

“No,” I lied.

“Have I hurt you?”

“No, I’m just… I think my mind melted. I came one too many times.”

He chuckled. “No such thing.”

Joking was easier than confessing my true emotions to him. I was on the edge of falling for him, and that terrified me.

After the best sleep of my life, I woke up in his arms.

I had been thoroughly fucked last night. Maybe that was the secret.

Buttery sunlight streamed through the sheer white curtains. When I stirred, his arms tightened around me. He held me in such a protective way that my stomach fluttered. He kissed my neck just below my ear.

My fingertips traced a long scar across his chest. More scars marked his back, his arms, his thighs—some invisible to all but my fingertips. His muscles tensed under my touch. What memories did he have?

“Should I stop?” I asked.

“No.” He hesitated. “Do they bother you? My scars?”

“Your body is gorgeous.”

He kissed me again, then sighed. “I need to go.”

“Can’t you stay a little longer?”

“I promised the archmages I would start work on Project Lazarus today. Konstantin insisted on this ungodly hour.”

While Wendel dressed, I counted my payment for bringing him to Vienna. The gold coins glinted against the bed linens. He fastened his cufflinks with a smirk.

“Still not enough,” he said.

I rolled my eyes. “You act like having a bounty on your head is a good thing.”

“I should be worth at least twice as much.”

“Three times, considering your skill in bed.”

He laughed, his eyes bright. “I wasn’t going to say it. I thought it sounded too arrogant. What will you spend it on?”

“My sword. The sharkskin on the hilt has been getting a little cracked.”

“How mercenary of you.” He shrugged on his jacket and straightened his collar. “I wish we could spend all day together.”

“Or at least breakfast.”

“Tomorrow,” he said, which felt like a promise. “And tonight, dinner?”

Early morning in Vienna. The city had never looked so beautiful before.
