“I’m not hurt.”

His jaw tightened. “Did he touch you?”

“He tried.” I shuddered at the memory. “I beat him in a sword fight.”

“Tell me his name.”

“Just some random drunkard named Dirk.”

“I will hunt him down and kill him for you.”

Shivers crept down my spine. “You can’t.”

“I swore a vow to protect you. No one threatens you and lives.” His words were as smooth and cold as ice.

His fierce devotion took my breath away. But I couldn’t unleash the wrath of a necromancer upon my enemies.

“Promise me you won’t hunt down Dirk?”

“I’m not sure I can make that promise.”

I exhaled hard. “Wendel, you can’t leave a trail of bodies behind.”

“I beg to differ.”

“We’re in the middle of Vienna.”

“And I already eliminated the assassins who tried to ambush us here.”

Fuck, I couldn’t argue with that.

“Dirk isn’t worth your time. Please.”

“As you wish.” He brushed some of my hair from my eyes, a gesture that startled me with its thoughtfulness. “What did you have in mind for dinner? I’m famished.”

I sighed. “This morning, I would have said my favorite brewpub, but now I don’t want to run into any more trouble.”

“I will keep you safe.”

“You do know I can protect myself?”

“Undoubtedly, but you deserve a protector. Let me take care of you.”

My tension melted at his words. “Why?”

“There is no question.” He offered me his arm. “Come, walk with me. Show me the way to your favorite brewpub.”

Evening fell on Vienna and turned the sky the color of sapphires. Stars glinted faintly above, all but lost in the glow of gas lamps. Lingering outside the brewpub for a moment, I breathed in deeply to steel my nerves.

Wendel held the door. “After you.”

I stepped inside and scanned the area. No sign of Dirk, thank heavens. We settled at a quieter table in the corner.

Firelight played over the sharp angles of Wendel’s face. God, he was gorgeous. The Prince of the Undying didn’t belong here in this commonplace brewpub. It was surreal to bring him somewhere I had visited before.

“What’s good here?” Wendel asked.

“The apricot dumplings are delicious. I love them in Vienna.”
