I roll my eyes at him, and he swats my ass playfully.

“Yes, I haven’t forgotten. Though it’s not fair that Rhia gets to have all the fun,” I grumble.

Tiero steps closer, and bends lower to whisper in my ear. “Don’t worry, princess, I’ll make sure you have plenty of fun tonight.”

Then he molds his lips to mine in a kiss that has me hot in seconds. All too soon, though, he pulls away and, with a wink, leaves the room.

I get changed slowly, waiting until I can hear the roar of the snowmobiles before making my way to the mudroom to pull on my jacket and boots.

Rhia is already there, fully geared up, pulling her beanie over her head.

She grins at me. “You didn’t think I’d let you go out there on your own, did you? We both know you’d never find this guy, even with satellite navigation.”

I hate to admit it, but she’s right. There’s a good chance I’d get lost… not that it would have stopped me.

“Plus, you promised Tiero not to mush the sled until after the baby. So you’ll need a chauffeur.” She bows before me dramatically. “At your service, milady.”

I put my bestie in a headlock before hugging her tight.

Whistling to call the dogs, I say, “Let’s go then.”

Chapter Seventeen

Ella

Theaftereffectsoftheblizzard are everywhere as we set out on our dog sled odyssey through Homer.

Rhia is at the helm, while I’m on the little bench seat covered in blankets. The dogs are loving it being out and about. They were hard to control to start with, their energy and enthusiasm boundless after being cooped up during the storm.

Sledding is so much fun. This is without a doubt one of the best presents I’ve ever received.

Though it would be even better if I were driving this.

But given Tiero will likely lose it when he eventually learns about this expedition, I let Rhia steer, hoping that will appease him.

But my fingers itch to take over the reins. Sitting back is hard.

The weather is now calm. In fact, the sun is shining, and the sky is a brilliant blue. It’s so unlike the mayhem of the last few days.

I roughly remember where George Roberts lives, but finding his street, when you can’t tell where the road is, and all the signs are covered in inches of snow, is harder than we imagined, even with satellite navigation.

I’m doubly glad now Rhia is with me. This would have been so hard on my own.

We don’t come across many houses at first; our Second Dawn Cottage is truly in the middle of nowhere.

Whenever we do, though, people are out in force, armed with shovels and snow blowers, attempting to reclaim their driveways and cars from the frosty residues of that giant snowstorm. It’s a scene of organized chaos, with snow piled high and the air ringing with the rhythmic scraping of shovels.

We’ve been underway for some time when Rhia suddenly brings the sled to a grinding—or is it a sliding?—halt. Confused, I look over my shoulder at her.

“Why have we stopped?”

“El, I’ve just realized something.”

I can tell by her facial expression she’s had some sort of epiphany.

“What’s that?” I ask, curious.

“This is the last adventure we’ll ever go on as just you and me, the way it’s always been.”
