The magnitude of the ripple effect of each of my actions stares me in the face, but it fades away when I glance at Claudette.

I do a double take when I spot red blotches appearing on her face. Come to think of it, her words sound a little slurred, as if she’s drunk too much.

My brows furrow as I study her. Unperturbed, she carries on.

“Emotions fluctuate. They go up and down. But at the beginning and at the end of each day, consciously choose each other.”

Her words seem to be becoming strained now and a little muffled as she’s trying to speak. I throw a worried glance Rhia’s way, and she returns my gaze as if saying, ‘What’s going on?’

“Are you okay, Claude?” I ask, interrupting her when she’s about to speak again.

Not answering me, but turning to Rhia, she asks, “Was there any pineapple in that cocktail?”

At Rhia’s nod, she bites her lip, muttering, “Damn.”

“Why?” I ask, feeling uneasy.

Claudette chuckles, but the sound puts me more on edge.

“Well, there’s your third thing, darling,” she mumbles, looking at me.

Third thing? What third thing?

Oh no!

Chapter Twenty-Two

Ella

Thethirdthing…

It finally dawns on me what she’s talking about.

“Are you having an allergic reaction to pineapple?” Lex asks, connecting all the dots.

“Mmm,” she hums as she pulls down the scarf covering her neck, fluffing it in and out as if she was hot. It reveals angry looking hives dotting her skin.

“I’m fine. Tis will pass… eventually,” she assures us, shrugging her shoulders, seemingly not bothered. Then she sticks out her tongue, fanning it as if trying to cool it off.

“Oh my god!” I gasp.

Her tongue is noticeably swollen.

“Do we need to get you to a hospital? A doctor?” I’m ready to turn around and get the sled ready to take her when she holds up her hands to stop me.

“I’ll be fine. Tis has happened before…” She rolls her eyes. “A few times, actwually.”

I throw a horrified look Tiero’s way. He’s been watching the scene with his usual calm collectedness… much like Lex.

How are these men not ruffled?

“Let’s continue,” Claudette says, flicking through her notes.

A piece of paper flutters to the ground, and Tiero bends to pick it up. He glances at it and then his eyes shoot to me. His eyebrow quirks up, and I bet I know what he’s holding in his hand.

Of course it had to be our marriage license, didn’t it?

This is like a comedy of errors.
