That time it wasn’t an act. She was sincere. He tried not to gape.

“Look, I know what this is going to sound like, and believe me, after the terrible pickup lines I’ve thrown your way tonight I don’t blame you, but lady, if you genuinely believe that, you’ve been dating the wrong people your entire adult life.”

“That does sound a lot like a line, yes.”

Despite the effort she was still making to maintain her ice queen persona, he could detect a subtle change in her demeanour. Finally he’d managed to pique her interest. Shifting her shapely butt in her chair again, she relaxed her shoulders, leaned slightly closer and stroked her hair. Tiny moves, individually indicating nothing. Combined, they sent signal flares into the frigid New York night air.

For a moment, Xavier remained silent. His conversation this evening hadn’t exactly been stellar. He waited while she plungedinto her thoughts and swam around for a while. When her gaze returned to his, he decided to push his luck. Gently he placed his hand on hers, finding her flesh as smooth and warm as it looked.

She didn’t recoil. She didn’t scream. She didn’t slap his hand away.

Instead, she stared at him for the longest time. For the first moment since he’d set eyes on her, there was no emotion on her face. It was almost as if she were carved from marble, but for the flush of red still staining her flawless pale skin.

She bit her lip.

Now!his gut screamed. “Let me tell you something,” he murmured just loud enough to be heard.

Inhaling, he bent forward. She mirrored his move. He didn’t look away from her bright green eyes. She blinked so slowly it was as if she had closed them. The break in contact allowed him a momentary peek down her front at the ample breasts held firmly in place by her sculptured dress. If she noticed his distracted gaze, she didn’t acknowledge it as they both kept leaning forward in some sensual game of chicken. Mere inches from each other, Xavier tilted his head ever so slightly. A moment before their lips touched, he snaked his head to the side, his day-old stubble gently brushing her cheek.

His hot breath caressed her delicate skin. Her breath hitched, and her soft cheek nuzzled his.

Four little words reverberated around his skull.

Don’t fuck it up. Don’t fuck it up. Don’t fuck it up.

As his lips grazed her ear, her chest hitched. In a husky voice he barely recognised as his own, he whispered, “The tongue is an oft neglected muscle, frequently disregarded at the expense of its lower, harder brother. It’s a powerful implement, but capable of such feather-light caresses, it’s quite remarkable and versatile. Did I mention versatile? Capable of lapping, tracing, cradling, swirling, and penetrating. It lives to taste all the succulentdelights afforded to it. It is accomplished at lightning fast flicking or the most delicate feathery strokes. It is multitalented. Having no immediate end goal, the tongue can linger for as long as required and relentlessly pursue its pleasures again, and again, and again until it’s begged to stop.”

Straightening his back, Xavier resumed his normal speaking voice. “Like I said, versatile.”

What could only be described as a low, throaty purr emanated from the woman.

He saw the invitation and took it. Sliding his hand along her arm, he let it come to rest on her ribs. Unable to resist, he leaned closer again, the tip of his tongue licked her earlobe until her neck lolled sideways, beckoning him even closer. She tasted sweet, sweeter than he deserved, but he had no intention of letting that stop him.

Pushing him softly away, she faced him. Before him was another woman. Gone was the plastic shell of an unattainable goddess—it had been replaced by a woman consumed by one thing.

Pure lust.

Unable to think of anything coherent to say as the blood slid from his brain, Xavier merely blinked. The woman eased back into her chair with a new look on her face. A devilish look. He liked that look. Every molecule of his body liked that look.

“Where was this guy five minutes ago?”

“Right here, hiding behind a cunning veneer of ineptitude and verbal diarrhoea.”

She stared at him for a long moment. He could honestly say he didn’t know how it would play out. Had he gone too far? Not far enough?

She inhaled deeply and held onto the breath for a long time. Finally exhaling, she took a large swallow of her wine then quietly said, “Show me.”

Judging by the look on her face, her reply had shocked them both.

“I’m sorry?”

“I hope not.” With a wriggle of her nose, she repeated, “I want you to show me. You’re an interesting one, Xavier-the-lifeguard. You may be onto something with what you said before. I’ve been acting like a stuck-up princess all night and not having a great deal of fun, but you…you’ve managed to change my mind. Maybe this night won’t be a total mistake after all. There’s another part I’ve always wanted to play, if you don’t mind.”

She had his full attention. “That would be?”

Her eyes twinkled. “The dominant.” She must have detected his blank look. “I’ve spent a lifetime being less than…look, let’s just say, I won’t be playing second fiddle.”

“There are fiddles? Nobody told me there’d be fiddles.”
