No more pretending, no more hiding my true feelings. But alongside my elation, there's a nagging doubt that creeps into my mind.

I can't help but wonder if I'm setting myself up for heartbreak. After all, there's a significant gap between liking someone and being truly in love with them.

My feelings for Kyle run deep, much deeper than mere likeness; I'm in love with him. But this intense emotion terrifies me because it leaves me vulnerable. I worry about getting hurt in the process.

Each day, I try to go by what he said to me, taking it one day at a time. I have no idea what’s going to happen between Kyle and I in a few days, but I do know what is going to happen today, and it’s that we are going to an art gallery together for an art exhibition and after that, we would be having lunch and spending the whole day together.

The thought of spending the whole day with Kyle without the interference of work, makes me feel so happy.

I twirl in front of my mirror checking out the knee length dress that brings out my curves. After applying makeup on my face, I pick up my purse and head downstairs to meet Kyle who’s already waiting for me.

As I approach the living room, I hear muffled voices, it’s as if they are arguing, but I can’t seem t make out what’s being said until I get to the bottom of the stairs and see my father standing right there in the living room.

“I already told you that she doesn’t want to see you,” Kyle says to my father.

“You can’t stop me from seeing my daughter! Where is she?”

They both have their backs to the stairs, so can’t see me as I stand wondering if I should just slip back to my bedroom before they notice me.

Kyle is right about me not wanting to see my father. I’m still angry at him for selling me off the way that he did, and I don’t have anything to say to him.

Before I can make up my mind about sneaking back to my bedroom, my father turns around and our eyes lock as he sees me.

“Mija!” He calls out, smiling but I don’t return it. I can’t have him thinking that I’m okay with what he did.

“What are you doing here?” My voice sounds so broken and I feel like crying. I press my lips together, taking a few deep breaths in a bid to steady myself.

I’m now at the bottom of the stairs and as he takes a step closer, I take a step back. “What are you doing here?” I ask again.

“I came to see you of course. You haven’t been taking I or your mother’s calls, we were worried so I decided to come check on you and see if you are doing okay.”

I almost burst into laughter, isn’t it funny that he’s claiming to be worried about me after the way he spoke to me the last time.

“I’m fine, you can leave.”

My father looks shocked by my response, I’m sure if I had hit him with a brick, he won’t look as shocked as he is right now.

“MijaI…”

“I don’t want to talk to you, please leave.”

His expression quickly morphs into that of anger. “I’m your father, you can’t talk to me like that!”

Kyle who has been watching us, quickly steps in. “You heard her, she wants you to leave.”

My father turns to look at Kyle his eyes burning with anger, but Kyle doesn’t look any fazed.

“I’m here to talk to my daughter, stay out of this.” Spittle spills out of my father’s lips as he speaks, the veins in his neck popping out.

“And she’s, my wife. Your presence is clearly causing my wife discomfort, so I’m going to ask you to leave.”

I’m now staring at Kyle wondering if he has gone mad, I’ve never seen anyone speak to my father in that manner.

The silence in the room is deafening as they both stand, staring at each other. Kyle’s tall frame towers over my father. For a minute, I suspect that they are both going to punch each other.

Finally, my father retreats as he starts heading to the door and leaves without saying a word. I heave a sigh of relief when the front door shuts behind him.

I don’t realize Kyle is now standing in front of me, until he asks, “are you alright?” I throw my arms around him, pressing my head against his chest feeling grateful that he stood up for me.
