Ever since Jewel and I made up, we decided that we were going to give our marriage a real shot this time.

We've been making conscious efforts to bridge the gaps that once threatened to tear us apart. It's as if the storm that loomed over our marriage has finally given way to a calmer, more hopeful atmosphere.

We spend a lot of time together, getting to know each other better. We just got back from a week’s trip to Paris where we spent the whole week, sightseeing and trying out new meals.

“It’s Monday, yeah, I have to go to work.”

She groans and I chuckle, turning my neck to kiss her cheek. “I don’t want you to go, can’t you take the day off?” She starts to kiss my neck, her hands slowly moving to the waistband of my trousers.

A smile spreads across my face as I gently remove her hands. “I will be back before you know it.”

“No that isn’t true.” She drops a kiss on my neck and tries slipping her hands inside my trousers but I hold her hands.

I turn around to face her. “Why don’t you go shopping or hang out with your friends to pass the time?”

She pouts her lips, now twirling her hair around her fingers. “I don’t want to go shopping.”

Her response takes me by surprise and I bring my palm to her forehead checking her temperature just to be sure that she’salright and isn’t having a fever. “Since when have you ever said no to shopping?”

She shrugs. “I no longer get fulfillment in it. I’ve been thinking of getting a job.”

“Okay, that isn’t a bad idea. What would you like to do?”

With the way she shrugs I can tell that she hasn’t given it much thought. “How about you think about it, and when I get back from work, we can talk about it?”

“Okay. But there’s something that I’ve thought about that I would like to have.”

“And what’s that?” I turn back to face the mirror knotting my tie.

“I would like to have children.”

The moment those words left her mouth, I immediately feel the blood drain from my face. Did she just say that she wants to have children?

“Why?” I blurt out before I can stop myself. I turn to face her and she’s looking at me like I just said something stupid.

“Why not? We are married.”

“And who says it’s a must for married couples to have children?”

Her brows are furrowed as she stares at me. “Are you being serious or you’re joking?”

I keep a serious face as I slowly shake my head, letting her know that I’m not joking.

“You don’t want to have children?” She looks like she’s about to have a heart attack.

“No, I don’t.”

I’ve never wanted children. Not that I hate them, I just have never pictured myself being a father. And Jewel and I have never gotten around to talking about it, until now.

“Why not? Who doesn’t like children?”

“I never said that I don’t like children.”

“Then why don’t you want to have them?”

I release a harsh breath. “I’m running late for work. Let’s have this conversation another time.” I pick up my laptop bag and kiss her on her lips but she just stands staring at me wide-eyed like she’s just seeing me for the first time.

“I love you,” I whisper in her ear before leaving the bedroom and texting my driver to bring the car around.
