I steal a kiss before going upstairs to take a shower. I’m a little surprised by her reaction, I had expected her to still be upset about our discussion this morning, and want to talk about it the moment I walked in through the door.

But knowing Jewel, I know that she will still bring it up before we go to bed. When I enter our bedroom, I’m surprised at how tidy it looks.

Even though the housekeeper always comes around almost every day to clean up,Mischiefstill always finds a way to get the place disorganized.

But this room looks nothing like the disorganized room I had left this morning, and when I step into the bathroom, I find all of her beauty products which were always lying around on the vanity counter were all placed in the bathroom cabinet.

I knowMischiefwas the one who organized the place because the housekeeper had called in sick this morning.

As I take off my clothes and step into the shower, a smile spreads across my face as I realize what’s going on, two days ago, I complained aboutMischief‘sway of disorganizing things, and she’s trying to change.

As I turn on the shower and start to wash my hair, I feelMischiefwrap her arms around me from behind, she kisses my back. “Care for some company?” She asks as she starts helping me wash my hair.

I turn to face her and seal her lips in a searing kiss, and soon she has her back pressed to the wall with my body pressed against hers, holding her right leg as I begin to thrust into her.

“I want to have children, Kyle,” she says against my skin as she rests her head against my shoulder, both of us trying to catch our breaths.

“Now isn’t the best time, babe.”

She raises her head to look at me. “I know. But can you at least consider having kids in the future?”

“Yeah,” I respond with a nod and the smile she flashes me is something I can die for.

When we finish bathing, as we step out of the bathroom, I hear my phone ringing, I pad barefoot to the bed where I had left it. My mom’s name is dancing across the screen and when I answer it, she’s crying.

“Mom, what is the problem?” I ask in worry.

“Kyle, your dad has been involved in a terrible accident!”

Chapter 22

Jewel

The sterile scent of the hospital hangs heavy in the air, a sharp contrast to the usual fragrances of home. The harsh lighting casts a clinical glow on everything, making the surroundings feel stark and unwelcoming.

As I sit in the uncomfortable plastic chair, the coolness of the hospital air sends shivers down my spine. I hate hospitals, they always make me sick. But I have to be here for Kyle. Even though he had asked me to stay back at home, there was no way I would allow him to come here alone.

Kyle's mother sits beside me. Her hands tremble slightly as she clutches a tissue, her eyes red and swollen from tears that have already been shed. I gently rub her back, offering support in the little way that I can. She sniffles, trying her best to hold back her next bout of tears.

The rhythmic ticking of the clock on the wall accentuates the anxious silence that envelops us.

The distant murmur of hushed conversations and the occasional shuffle of footsteps create a subdued symphony of worry in the waiting room.

I steal a glance at Kyle, his face etched with concern, the lines on his forehead deepening with each passing moment. The sound of his uneven breaths is barely audible over the ambient noise.

Even though he doesn’t have a good relationship with his father, I know he’s worried about him.

I reach for Kyle's hand, offering a gentle squeeze, a feeble attempt to convey my support. His skin feels clammy, a sign of the anxiety coursing through him.

Kyle turns to look at me, gently returning the gesture of squeezing my hand. “I’m going to get coffee; would you like me to get you some?”

“A coffee will be nice, thanks.”

He turns to his mother. “Mom?”

“Nothing for me,” she says shaking her head.

Kyle gives me a curt nod before standing up to go get the coffee. I reach for his mother’s hand and give it a gentle reassuring squeeze.
