“I am not leaving you like this,” I say. “Can we please sit down and talk?”’

“You sicked your goonish driver on me,” she says, adjusting her towel. “Pretending like he was there to do a good deed.”

“That’s twice you said something like that. Tell me exactly what you mean.”

“Ask him yourself,” Brynne says but explains anyway. “I was talking to my dear friend when Nick drove up and insisted I get in the car. I left my friend in pieces because Nick pushed me to leave. It was a now-or-never prospect. When I got into the car, he broadsided me with threats.”

I tip her chin, forcing her to look at me.

“I didn’t ask him to do that,” I say softly.

“How did he know then?” she challenges.

We are standingsoclose to one another. I fight the urge to lean in and kiss Jack, but who knows how he’d react? Push me away, maybe?

“Did you tell Gretchen?” I ask gently, arching my brow.

Brynne’s face relaxes as my question solves the puzzle.

“He talks to her a lot,” I continue patiently. “It’s a crappy thing, office gossip. But it happens. Unfortunately, you got the brunt of it today.”

“Really?” she asks. “You didn’t instruct Nick to be mean to me?”

“No, I did not,” I say.

I tuck a dangling, damp strand of hair behind her ear. My fingertips graze her skin.So soft.

“So why was Todd upset?” I whisper.

Brynne regards me with big, babydoll eyes.

“He’s jealous,” she begins.

I stepped back and instantly snapped out of my aroused trance.

“I thought you weren’t a thing?” I ask. “The two of you?”

“We’re not – and we never have been,” Brynne answers plainly. “He has a crush on me.”

“Well, the stoner dude is smarter than I gave him credit for,” I murmur.

“Don’t call him that,” she says softly.

“I won’t,” I say. “From here on out. Why is Todd jealous?”

“He thinks something is happening between you and me,” she answers, again lifting her big, round eyes to me.

I nod, gazing at her darkly.

“Again, I say, very smart guy,” I say.

I reach for her cheek with a delicate touch. My fingertips glide along her jawline. She presses her eyelids tight, her long lashes fan against her skin. She curls up into my palm like an affectionate cat.

I lower my mouth to taste hers, to reignite the charge that sparked between us earlier at the office. In all my dalliances and adventures, I never experienced the rush I did when Brynne first kissed me.

She presses her hand to my chest, pulling back to study me. I am patient. I wait. She leans forward slowly, resuming our kiss. She wraps her arms around my neck.

I cup the curve of her backside, lifting her. She hikes her legs at the same time, climbing me. She plasters herself to me as the towel falls away.
