Noah’s face lit up in humor. “Yeah, babe, of course. I just might not get the leading lady I want.”

“That sucks. I’m sorry.”

Noah didn’t say any more on it, just picked up my hand, kissed my palm, and slid from the bed. I watched him head into the bathroom, and I dropped back onto the mattress, watching the sheer gauzy curtains dance in the late morning breeze.

The two of us ate the cold breakfast and drank our cold coffee together before he dressed and left for the day. He had more meetings with Rothman about the preproduction, including meeting with a couple of producers who could get what they wanted, while I headed into the city to do some computer shopping.

The one thing California didn’t lack was tech companies. I found what I was looking for quickly enough. I managed to visit at least three companies to compare prices before I congratulated myself on a job well done and headed toward Rodeo Drive to window shop. My phone rang while I was standing outside a jewelry shop admiring some vintage pieces. Kenzie’s face was smiling at me from the screen in the way of caller I.D.

“Oh. My. God.TheKenzie Madison is calling me.”

“Shut up, dickhead.”

“To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I have this crazy favor to ask of you.”

“How crazy?”

“It’s pretty out there, but I figure you’ll enjoy it.”

“Now I’m intrigued.”

“You should be.”

I huffed out a laugh and startled the woman standing next to me who was admiring a gaudy ring next to the gorgeous emerald in a princess setting I was drooling over.

“Tell me before I burst with anticipation.” I turned away from the store and headed back to make heart eyes at a purse I’d seen the last time I was here.

“I’ve been invited to a Memorial Day party. Todd is going to be away on location, and I don’t want to go alone. Would you come with me?”

“Whose party?”

“Does it matter?”

I grinned, even though she couldn’t see me.

“There’s a catch, though.”

I groaned aloud, gaining some looks from high fashion women with overly oversized sunglasses strolling past me. “What’s the catch, Kenz?”

“It’s USO-themed.”

“U.F.O.?”

“No, dumbass. U.S.O.”

“Does that mean we go as pin-up girls?”

“Or the ladies that were part of the war effort. I was thinking of going withRosie the Riveteror a naval nurse. Something sassy.”

“And sexy.”

“That too. What do you say? I figured I would ask now. That gives us at least six weeks to get these costumes sorted out. I met a seamstress on the set of my last film, and she said to call her anytime. She does a lot of period pieces.”

“Let’s do it.”

Kenzie squealed on her end of the line, forcing me to pull my phone from my ear and smile at a woman who looked at me strangely.
