“And who did you bring with you?”

Noah looked over his shoulder and held his hand out for me, pulling me closer when I accepted it. “This incredibly sexy creature is my girlfriend, Amber.”

Macie studied me again, her scrutiny making me uncomfortable. It took everything in me to stop that from showing on my face when she leaned forward, gripped my chin, and planted a kiss on my lips. Her kiss wasn’t the same kind she’d given Noah. It was the complete opposite. Her tongue darted between my lips and explored like an invading army, utterly oblivious to my discomfort or lack of participation. Her other hand slipped into the hair at the nape of my neck and fisted there, keeping me in place.

The woman could kiss, and had she not taken what she wanted without invitation, I could have even appreciated it for what it was, but her arrogance and presumption shut down everything but my brain. I even heard the yelp from Noah as I squeezed the bones in his hand tight enough to grind them together. He coughed loudly, and taking the hint, Macie backed away with a smile.

“Damn. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”

“If you’d asked, it would have been far more enjoyable.”

I felt Noah tense next to me, but he relaxed when Macie’s genuine laughter burst from her. “Fair point. Sorry. Molly makes me a little overconfident. I forget my manners.” She waved her hand, and someone appeared with a silver tray and an array of drugs covering the surface. “Would you like something?”

“Maybe later.”

“Right on.”

Noah laughed nervously and eyed the tray. “Could I?”

Macie waved her hands. “Please, what’s your poison, Noah Jennings? Inquiring minds want to know.”

He went for the cocaine.

“Primo choice, my friend.” Macie waited until he was finished before dipping her finger into the white powder and rubbing her gums with it. Then our current time with Macie was over, and her newest guests stepped in behind us.

“Have fun, my little cherry lollipop.” She giggled, falling back into her throne.

If I’d been uncomfortable before, it was nothing in comparison to the way my skin crawled now. It was like she was the gatekeeper to the real debauchery going on in her mansion, and the moment we stepped into the next basement room, I wished I’d listened to my gut and gone home.

10 - 11pm

You hear things about Hollywood and their parties—unsubstantiated rumors, and speculation about how the other half lived. Most come from tabloid television or articles written by shunned people, but curiosity was always there when I considered it. Kenzie had hinted that it wasn’t as ludicrous an idea as we’d once thought—she even told me about it most of the time—but she’d never hinted at anything quite like what I was seeing now.

Explicit pornography played on every bare wall. Men and women walked around naked, handing out drinks to wealthy men in suits and women in expensive dresses, some forced to crawl to them. Sex acts were performed out in the open, while more humans in birdcages were fondled and touched, looking less than happy about it while onlookers laughed at their discomfort.

The lower rooms of the house resembled a dungeon, but not the sexy BDSM kind. This place was like a medieval torture chamber, where women were in stocks, and men were chained to the wall or attached to narrow gurneys by handcuffs. Some were used as shot glasses, some drug stations, others entertainment, but they all had one thing in common: they looked hopeless and resigned, their eyes haunted as they waited for what was going to come next.

“You okay?” Noah asked, his arm wrapping around my waist and pulling me closer.

“No. I’m so fucking far from okay right now, I could be in another hemisphere. These people aren’t here voluntarily, Noah.”

“They’re actors, baby. They’re just pretending not to be happy.”

No one was that good of an actor. Their haunted eyes told a story no one wanted to see while they were here.

“No.”

“If it makes you uncomfortable, we’ll go outside.”

“Uncomfortable?” I asked in a low hiss. “I’m disgusted. If we called the cops right now, you’re telling me these people would tell them they were playing a part?”

At the wordcops,Noah swept me toward the doors leading to the lower balcony facing the Pacific and into a dark empty corner where no lights or people lingered.

“Are you trying to ruin my career?”
