“Understood, beautiful lady, but you are all sorts of crazy right now. You ain’t finding shit in this frame of mind. What are you looking for?”

Laughing bitterly, I threw up my free arm at the cars surrounding us. “A black BMW.”

Frankie’s chuckle was dark. “I see your problem. Just come back inside for now, calm down, then we can fix the problem.”

“I need my phone and my purse. I appreciate you trying to help, but—” My words dried up as I turned around and finally saw Frankie in the light. The light was so dim down at the beach I’d only really seen an outline and blurred features, but here outside the house, where security lights lit the parked cars, I finally saw what I’d missed before, and why his voice had been so damn familiar.

Frankie was the guy that had been in Noah’s house. Frankie had been Noah’smiscommunication.

“Awe, shit, I wish you hadn’t looked at me like that.”

Before I could even open my mouth to scream, he had his hand over my mouth and my back against his chest, the heat of his body seeping through the thin material like liquid fire.

“I’m sorry, baby girl. There ain’t no easy way to look at this. You’re fucked.”

I struggled in his grip, the heel of my shoes finding the top of his foot enough for him to curse me out in Spanish, but he never released me. He eased me to the shadows while I fought to head to the light and the crowd by the front door, begging behind the hand with useless words that went unheard. The moment the darkness bathed me in its embrace, I found myself face down on the hood of a car, both of my wrists in one of Frankie’s hands as he pulled something from his pocket.

“If it’s any consolation, I regret that this is happening to you.” The sharp end of a needle found its way into my ass, and before I could bark out a complaint, heat spread through my veins. Warm, comforting oblivion moving through my mind while the suppressed scream of protest drowned under the waves of euphoria. “There you go. Don’t forget to breathe.”

I found myself doing as he asked, fascinated by the expansion of my lungs as he slung his arm around my waist and headed toward the garage. I had no idea what was on the other side until I blinked and I was inside. Frankie walked me down a narrow corridor, and my head dropped forward to make sure my feet were there because I couldn’t feel them.

“What?” I slurred.

“I don’t have any answers for you.”

“Why?”

“Yet, you still have questions.” He chuckled, hefting me up in his arm as he took a set of stairs going up, where the music sounded muffled.

“I don’t…” My mouth felt as though it were filled with cotton, and my thoughts were like chasing dandelion fluff on a breezy day. Everything was just out of reach, the only thing keeping me upright being Frankie.

There was a whistle from somewhere, but my head wouldn’t work to aim in that particular direction.

Frankie slid into a room with another guy. I blinked, trying to take him in, but he was a mass of shapes and colors. The koi tattoo on his arm was the only thing registering as it flicked its tail at me.

“Put her on the bed for now. We have to wait until the rest plays out and make sure she’s seen leaving with us.”

“How long?” Frankie asked.

“Fuck knows. Mr. fucking Hollywood wants to see her first.”

“Why?”

“The fuck you asking me for?”

I tried to move and make my muscles take commands so I could at least try and run, but bones and sinew were now liquid, and no matter how much I screamed at my body to listen, it was disconnected from my floating brain completely.

“Help,” I heard myself say, but the words were slurred and barely comprehensible.

“Why isn’t she totally out?” the new guy asked, leaning over me and studying my face. His hot hand grabbed my chin while his other hand’s index finger and thumb opened my eyelids farther apart.

“She has to appear to leave on her own two feet.”

“Seems like a lot of trouble for one chick.”

“You have no fucking idea, man.” Frankie chuckled. “That’s a ten-million dollar pussy you’re looking at.”

“The fuck?”
