“There’s nothing complicated about finding enjoyment in someone else,” I said, filling my tumbler with more whiskey. I would send her a case—my mind was already made up about it. She had good taste. “And it sounds like you could benefit from something casual to help you get over whatever happened with the last guy.”

Heather opened her mouth and closed it again like she’d reconsidered telling me what she was going to say. “You don’t know anything about that.”

“And I don’t need to know. That’s what I’m saying. All we’re doing is having fun together. No strings attached.” Except for the strings I was planning on attaching to entangle her.

“I’ll have to think about it.” She sighed as she retrieved her bag. “See you tomorrow.”

“Stop overthinking,” I called after her as she left. Before she could even start her car, I texted my contact to send a case of the whiskey to her mother’s house.

It was time to dial up the pressure, especially if I wanted Heather to stay.

I had already set some of my initial plans in motion. Having sex with her hadn’t been a part of those plans, but it had been a welcome addition. It wasn’t lost on me that our bodies seemed to fit perfectly together, moving in sync with both of us knowing exactly what the other wanted.

Even when she was away from me, when I was working in my office, and she was at home, Heather was still proving to be a distraction.

It didn’t really bother me, though. In fact, I found myself having fun with all of the preparations and all the ways I could go over the top in getting her to stay here forever.

Like the call that I received the following week while I was at my desk.

“Graham, what the hell is going on?” she demanded. I could hear exuberant barking in the background, along with Collins laughing and shouting.

“Sounds like my surprise arrived,” I said. “You’re welcome.”

“How—Graham, this is my dog, Hank.” Heather sounded dumbfounded. “My dog. What did you do?”

“I figured you wanted a friendly face from back home to keep you company while you were out here,” I said. “Are you surprised?”

“I…I don’t even know what to say. This feels like a dream. He was in a boarding facility. I hated doing it, but I didn’t have a choice. Graham, why?”

Something compressed inside my chest. “It wasn’t hard to find him, and now Collins has a dog to play with, too. Maybe you can get her outdoors for some exercise more often.”

“You didn’t really fly my dog across the country so your daughter could play with him.”

It was hard to get the words out—harder than I thought it would be. I certainly wasn’t going to tell her I’d gone through all this trouble to try to trap her into staying on as my daughter’s nanny.

“You deserve to be happy,” I said. “That’s why I did it.”

It sounded hokey even to my own ears, and Heather huffed a laugh. “I guess I’ll just have to accept it then.”

Our call was interrupted, then, by my secretary, Rita, opening the door. “Mr. Hilborne, it’s another woman who says she’s here about the nanny position and doesn’t have an appointment.”

“Fuck.” It was the third such incident. This was getting goddamn ridiculous. “Where are they coming from?”

“Your guess is as good as mine, Mr. Hilborne.” Rita crossed her arms. “Do you want me to get security?”

No, I wanted to figure out why this was happening. “Send her in.”

That raised Rita’s eyebrows. “As you wish.”

The woman was dressed—if possible—even sleazier than the others. Her dress clung to her every curve and ripple, and her red hair was only natural coming from a bottle.

“Graham,” she gushed. “Oh my God, thanks for having me here.”

“I didn’t have you here,” I informed her, leaning back from my desk. “You came unannounced and uninvited.”
