“Honey, there you are,” Anita stated with a smile when Wendy approached her. “I was afraid you’d gotten lost.”

“No, but I’m not feeling well,” Wendy told her, giving in to her intuition. “I think I need to go.”

Anita gave her a panicked look for a moment, but she quickly recovered and gave her a look of concern.

“Oh no! I hope it’s nothing Frank did. He can get a little rude when he’s drinking.”

No, it’s something your boy toy did,Wendy thought, fighting the urge to say the words out loud.

“Not at all,” she replied instead. “But let’s do lunch soon? I want to hear more about your friend Jensen and his investment ideas.”

This seemed to perk Anita up immediately, and she readily shook her head.

“Absolutely, I’ll call you,” Anita assured her.

Wendy started to walk away, but as she made her way through the crowd, the feeling in her gut grew worse. By the time she’d retrieved her coat from the check room, she was practically running out of the door. Thankfully, the valets were swift, and brought her car around almost immediately.

As she drove away, she took a deep breath. For a moment she started to relax, but then a flash of light caught her eyes, and she looked up in the rearview just in time to see a vehicle behind her switch its lights off. Something automatic took over her, and as she pressed her foot down on the gas and held the wheel with one hand, she pulled out her phone and called Erik.

“What’s wrong?” he asked right away, his voice full of concern. “It’s still early.”

“I had to leave,” she replied quickly. “But we’ll talk about why later.” She paused, her eyes flashing back to the rearview mirror. It was faint, but she could still see the outline of the dark car still following her.

“For now I need your help,” she continued. “I need you to get over to my house using the back way as soon as possible. Someone’s following me, and I think it’s Jimmy.”
