When Brett looked back over at me, there was a slight smile on his face. “Have dinner with me.”

“What?”

My heart skipped a beat as he watched me, his gaze dropping to my mouth before moving back to my eyes.

“Have dinner with me.”

“How did we go from talking about a potential promotion to you wanting to get dinner with me?”

He shrugged. “I’ve decided it’s time to stop pretending you aren’t the most intriguing woman I’ve ever met. I want to get to know you, which isn’t happening in this town.”

“So, what, you want to run away to another town for dinner like a pair of teenagers trying to avoid their parents?”

He smiled. “That could be fun. But no, I was thinking more like two adults tired of dancing around each other.”

“Who doesn’t want Mia to know.”

Brett’s smile dropped. “No. I don’t want Mia to know yet. I want to get to know you and see if there could be something there before we figure out how to tell her.”

“And you think keeping a secret from her is right.”

“I think it’s the only thing we can do right now.”

Guilt curled through me as I considered the options. Brett was the only man who had interested me since my ex.

But it was more than that too. There were chances to excel. Things were not being shut down when I talked about the kind of life I wanted or the vision I saw for a place. Talking about things with him was easy. He encouraged the wildest thoughts while still putting a realistic perspective on him.

He was the only man I had met who didn’t seem worried about my ambition. Most men I had dated over the years were intimidated by it. My ex had thought that I should stay at home and be the perfect housewife while he chased his professional baseball career.

It was one of the most significant tension points of our relationship.

“It’s just dinner, Georgia. After that, I have somewhere else to show you.”

“You seem pretty confident that I will agree to dinner.”

The corner of his mouth twitched. “Maybe we need to create a night that is memorable.”

“Alright,” I said, crossing my arms. “Pick me up at six.”

Dinner passed in a blur. I could remember talking to Brett about the business and where I wanted my life to go, but everything else faded away when he parked in front of a house on the beach.

“This place is amazing,” I said, looking up at the black house contrasted sharply against the white sand.

Even though the stars were hanging high overhead, midnight nearing fast, I could still make out the crest of the waves crashing.

“Wait until you see it tomorrow morning; it’s even better at sunrise.”

I raised an eyebrow and turned to look at Brett as he rounded the front of his car and stood beside me. His arm wrapped around my waist, and he pulled me closer. His lips pressed against my temple.

“What makes you think I will be here at sunrise?” I asked.

Brett chuckled, sending a shiver down my spine. He kissed my exposed shoulder before slowly working the thin strap down my arm. His kisses trailed my shoulder and neck, sucking and teasing the sensitive flesh.

“Call it a hunch,” he said, nipping at my earlobe.

I turned and kissed him, our mouths moving together. Brett’s hands slid down my body, moving along the curve of my waist. Sparks flew as our mouths moved together. Wetness coated my inner thighs as he lifted and pressed me back against the car.

His cock pressed against me through the thin layers of fabric separating us. I moaned at the friction as he kissed his way down my neck.
