“Well, those people are wrong. You’re going to be a great mother, and you’re going to have the career you’ve always wanted. So I’m going to help you in whatever way I can.”

“I’m lucky to have you.”

He shook his head before brushing his lips lightly against mine. “You don’t know how lucky I am to have you. After my wife died, everything in the world felt numb. Then you came around, and you changed everything. It was like life had more of a purpose again.”

Tears gathered in my eyes. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

At that moment, I knew that whatever came next for us, somehow, we were going to get through it together.

Chapter Fourteen: Brett

Georgiawasperchedonthe counter’s edge and licking brownie batter from the wooden spoon as I placed the brownies in the oven. Though she wasn’t far along in her pregnancy, the cravings were already starting.

Thankfully, Mia was gone for the weekend, so I didn’t have to worry about her walking into the house and seeing Georgia hanging around. The other weekend at the beach house had been odd enough.

Pretending that Georgia and I weren’t together was getting harder and harder. So while she was over this weekend, we were going to try and figure out how to talk to Mia about us.

“This is so good,” Georgia said as she licked away the last bit of batter. She tossed the spoon into the sink and grinned at me. “You’re going to have to bake for me more often.”

“I’ll make you whatever you want,” I said as I crossed the kitchen to stand between her legs.

Georgia cupped my face and kissed me gently, her legs wrapping around my waist. I ran my hands up and down her thighs, nipping at her bottom lip and deepening the kiss.

She moaned, and her hands sank into my hair, holding me closer. I grabbed her waist and pulled her to the counter’s edge, my cock straining against my pants.

“What the fuck is going on in here?”

I pulled away from Georgia to see Mia standing in the doorway to the kitchen, a duffel bag in her hand. My heart plummeted to my feet when I saw the look on her face.

“Mia,” Georgia said, sliding to the floor and stepping around me to head for Mia. “I can explain everything.”

“No!” Mia shook her head and glared at Georgia. “You’re supposed to be my best friend, but here you are stuffing your tongue down my father’s throat? Get the fuck out of my house now!”

“Don’t talk to her like that,” I said sternly. I turned to Georgia and sighed. “Maybe it’s better if you go so I can talk to Mia alone.”

Georgia nodded; her lips pressed together in a thin line. She looked at Mia with glassy eyes. “I’m sorry that you had to find out this way.”

“But you’re not sorry for whatever the fuck you’re doing with my father. So get the hell out.”

Georgia hurried away, the front door closing behind her. I ran my hand down my face, a million different thoughts racing. I didn’t know what I would say to her or how I would explain any of it.

“I can’t believe the pair of you,” Mia said, dropping her bag and going to sit down at the kitchen table. Instead, she leaned back in the chair and crossed her arms.

“I don’t know what you want me to say right now. Neither of us planned on falling in love with each other, but it happened.”

“You could have picked anyone else in the world.” Mia’s upper lip curled with disgust. “She’s young enough to be your daughter. She was my best friend.”

“She still is your best friend.”

“Not after this shit. She isn’t.”

I sighed and sat down on the other side of the table. “I don’t know what you want me to say right now.”

Mia shook her head. “I don’t want you to say anything. I’ve already seen all I need to see. I can’t believe that you would do this to me.”

“What do you want me to do?” I asked, my voice breaking when I saw the hurt on her face. “How do you want me to fix this? I’ll break up with her if this bothers you that much. We never wanted to hurt you, Mia.”
