“But then I heard Mason scream ‘Dad’ with the most terrifying tone in his voice. I froze, and saw Mom get up and run down the hallway, and then heard her scream also.”

“Oh Ella,” I said with deep sorrow.

“Everything from there is a blur, as I pretty much blocked it all out. I remember there being a lot of commotion, and Mason came and sat down with a blank stare on his face,” Ella said. “My Dad had a heart attack, and when Mason went to get him for supper, he was already gone. He has never been the same ever since. And as time continued, he just got angrier, and angrier. He had to grow up fast and become the man of the house.”

“Ella, I am so sorry. So, so sorry,” I said with sorrow in my voice.

“Thanks, me too. My Dad was amazing, and things have never been the same since.”

And just as fast as she told the story, her face changed, almost like she was in another reality, and just came back to the present.

“Anyways,” Ella said as she wiped her tears, “sorry about that, Lucy. Now you know why Mason is such a jackass.” Ella’s face then changed from sad to almost laughing. “But he doesn’t need to be such an asshole to me all the time. It’s like, once he took over Dad’s business, he became better than everyone, and treats people as such.”

“Maybe you can talk to your mother about it. She might find a way to get him to stop his disturbances.”

Ella clapped, shook her head, and began pacing the room again. “That’s where the problem is Mom doesn’t seem to care. Either that, or she is avoiding her grief by not being here much as she is always on the go,” she continued. “I don’t know which part of the globe she’s currently in, she spends more time on the jet than on the floor that one, and she dotes on her loving son.” She paused for a moment, let out a big sigh, and rolled her eyes. She then continued speaking, “the son who gave her an unlimited credit card to do as she wishes, and what do I get? I, the last child, and the only girl in the family, run the errands here and keep it conducive enough for another one of their parties. Christ, this is itching on my mind. It’s making me go nuts.” She grabbed her hair and sighed. “Do you know about anywhere I can sell a human being?”

“Bet you are probably going to find someone in the same line of your brother’s business who will be willing to buy.”

“I hate following him at his parties with his friends.”

“Now, I really can’t help you.”

“Come on. I am already suffering, knowing just my brother. I imagine what his group of friends would be like.”

“I doubt all of them would be the same.”

Ella sighed and shook her head. “It’s already too late, I suppose. I will have to intensify my search for a husband.”

“Until they know who your brother is,” I chuckled as I watched her cover her face in frustration while groaning. “Remember that Mark guy?”

“It took me ages to get rid of such an awful moment. Please don’t make me remember it,” Ella begged, but I wasn’t having it.

“He just stood there rooted to the spot on the television when he saw you with your brother.”

“Lucy, please.”

“And then he goes, you guys are wealthy. Does it mean . . .”

Ella cut me off by throwing a pillow on my face, which made me laugh.

“You are unbelievable, Lucy.”

“Sorry,” I muttered amidst laughter, “I just couldn't help it.”

“Yeah, it’s okay,” Ella said sadly as she bent her head and began to look at her nails.

Worried, I moved towards her, sat beside her, and held her shoulders. “Surely what your brother asked of you this time does not require my sweetheart to get in such a foul mood.” Up until this point, I have not had the pleasure of meeting her brother, or any family member, for that matter. But have heard lots about them.

She never spoke of her Dad, though, and now I know why.

She turned and looked at me, her eyes red with unshed tears. “But it is, babe. He wants me to stay at his mansion and get things ready for his business party.”

“Is it that bad?” I asked, frowning.

“It is terrible, Lucy.” She moved away from me and stood there, her hands folded. “The place is like a fortress Lucy, a freaking fortress. The land is big. You can have a football game there, and there will be more space, and it has so many rooms and hallways you will literally need a scooter or something driveable to be able to move across such a monstrous building, and he wants me to stay there, alone, by myself, overlooking a bunch of his staff, of which I have zero ideas who they are.”

She said and burst into tears soon enough.
