“No, dammit.” I groaned, “I just don’t want to see your face around here. Take some time off to regroup. Then, when you come back in a few weeks, I want you to find absolutely everything, and I mean everything about that couple. What they eat, what they like to wear, if they go anywhere, I want to know. And, when I say everything, I want to know everything, am I clear?”

“Yes, sir,” James muttered, “I am sorry I let you down. It won’t happen again.”

“We shall see, I suppose. Get out of my face for a few weeks. Then, get me everything. I want to know who says no to the Blackwoods,” I could see the relief on James’ face. He nodded, quickly turned around, and hurried off without turning back.

I turned, groaned, and held my head in frustration while letting out a sharp curse, which I was sure traveled across the house.

I took a deep breath, and for a very brief moment, I felt at peace. This problem with James was for another day, not tonight.

I turned, and looked to the door that led back to the hallway. Surely, the guests would guess I was the one that shouted if I went inside now.

I decided I would head to the study nearby to have a strong whiskey and clear my head for a second before returning to the chaos called my life.

CHAPTER SEVEN

LUCYEDWARDS

“Oh, Lucy,” Ella cried as she moved toward me while dancing, “I am having the best time of my life.” She grabbed my hand and began to twirl around excitedly. “There are so many fine men here, and I have gotten five numbers so far. Isn’t that thrilling?”

“Of course, of course,” I muttered as I looked throughout the hall and saw the guests dancing and drinking to their fill. People who controlled everything. So far, I have met and greeted people I only saw on television, which was as wild as it goes.

I turned toward Eve and found her dancing with a man Ella had introduced as the States Head of Military, a refined older man, probably in his sixties, but divorced. Looking at how he danced perfectly with Eve, it was no secret that this wasn’t their first meeting.

I looked around, looking for the only man that interested me tonight, much to my dread. Mason had spoken so well tonight and commanded the event in his fantastic suit, which reeked of affluence.

There was no doubt he was built and created for things like this seeing all these people around greet and accord him respect fit for a king amazed me but, at the same time, made me wearier about him. It also made me really attracted to him.

With the caliber of people here, it was no saying he could do anything he wanted and get away with it, just like he had said many times.

I sipped the champagne again, trying to douse my worry as I gazed through the guests looking for him.

It had been over thirty minutes, and he still hadn’t shown, which was surprising. These were his people. He should be here, or maybe he had grown tired after the address and had retired immediately. Even that wasn’t likely.

I shook my head, trying to forget him, as I turned towards Ella, who was miming the song being played by the band.

Ella approached me and whispered, “See that man over there?” She turned toward a fine gentleman I had seen earlier with the Prime Minister moving towards us while sipping his drink. “He has been staring at us throughout the evening.”

“Does he know your brother is gonna have his head for staring at his sister for so long?”

“What?” She whispered, “He’s with the PM. Surely my brother knows his boundaries,” she turned to me, giggled, and added. “And who says it’s just me? He can have the both of us. Bet we would make good sister-wives.”

My face reddened as I turned toward her and shoved her slightly. “Ella,” I muttered, sipping the drink, trying to hide the color on my face as the gentleman came closer.

“Ladies.” He raised his glass, “I hope you both have been enjoying your evening?” He asked, smiling.

“Of course.” Ella nodded excitedly as she held my arm while I looked away worriedly.

“The name is Phil, the new Foreign Minister.” He muttered as he stretched out his hand for a shake.

“Oh.” Ella whispered, immediately removing her arm from mine and shaking his, “No wonder your face looked so familiar.” She turned towards me and touched me gently. “I told you his face looked very familiar, didn’t I?”

“Of course.” I lied, sipping my drink again before turning towards the man.

“Didn’t get your names.” He muttered, still holding Ella’s hand but still glancing at me.

“Ella.”

“You are Mason’s sister. Couldn’t fail to recognize the familiarity.”
