Ella shrugged and scoffed, “Because you are Mason Blackwood.”

I sighed, took a deep breath, and looked at her again, “Are you going to open it?”

“Just open it already, child. Don’t you two ever stop?” Mom asked with a shake of the head.

After another look at me, Ella knocked at the door. “Hello, sweetheart, it’s me. Are you in?”

We waited for a few moments, but there was no answer.

“Knock again.”

Ella sighed and did, but there was yet no reply.

“A little harder this time, if you may.”

“She might be sleeping.”

I reached toward the door so I could do the knocking myself, but she raised her hand and stopped me.

“All right, all right, fuck, you are so impatient.” She cursed and clapped again, this time a little harder.

“Maybe she’s not home.” Mom quipped.

“No, she is, and she’s a light sleeper,” Ella said, her voice a little nervous as she opened the door to the room and made her way inside immediately while we followed.

Her bed was empty, and a second later, Lucy walked out of the bathroom, wearing a white gown, looking so pale and weak it felt like she hadn’t closed her eyes for weeks.

“What the hell?” Mom muttered, looking very worried about Lucy for the first time since I had known her.

“Oh my, Lucy,” Ella cried as she reached toward Ella, who was already making her way to the bed to sit, “I leave you for just one minute, and you look like death. What's going on?” Ella asked as she sat beside Lucy, who barely recognized those in the room. “Are you okay?”

“That is a silly question, Ella. Surely you could see that she is far from being okay. Mason, quickly get the car ready. We need to take her to see a doctor.”

“No.” Ella said sharply, “No hospitals. She hates them.”

“God, kid, I am not talking about the hospital. I am talking about here. Surely, the doctor here can see her.”

Lucy held her head and burst out crying soon enough, startling everyone in the room, especially Ella, who became frantic.

“Baby, baby talk to me. What’s going on?” She turned toward us, crying. “Lucy doesn’t cry. She never cries.”

“Just call the doctor. They can help,”

“They won’t be fast enough,” I muttered a curse, walking toward her. “Excuse me.”

Ella moved away quickly, and without thinking, I bent forward, reached my hand beneath her, and carried her. “Call the doctor, tell him to come over immediately, tell him it’s an emergency, and he should use the bird.”

“Yes,” Ella muttered breathlessly as she looked for her phone, “My phone, fuck it’s in the sitting room,” Ella cried and dashed off while I hastily carried Lucy towards the exit, with Mother far behind us, unable to keep pace.

I moved Lucy, who was covering her face with her hands, closer to me and sighed. “You have lost a lot of weight. What have you been up to?”

Her sobbing intensified, and I muttered a curse. “Don’t worry. Everything will be fine. You are going to be okay.”

Her body became a little less tense as I carried her. She then snuggled closer to my body as if I were her safe haven.

Feeling an urgent need to help her, I increased my pace as I ran down the stairs, hoping the doctor would get there as fast as possible.
