He instantly turned to look at me and asked, “is it true?”

Instead of an answer, I started sobbing, wondering what in the hell I was going to do. Through my sobbing, I managed to get out a few words. “So much for doctor patient confidentiality,” I said angrily.

I felt his weight press on the bed and knew he was sitting.

“So, you knew? Now I know why you have avoided me all this while.”

“I didn’t.” I cried, wiping the tears that had refused to stop falling.

“If you didn’t, why have you continued avoiding me.”

“Because there was no need to re-live what happened. I hoped that if I acted like nothing really happened, then we could just move on with our lives. So, I could live my life just the way it was before I met you.”

“I don’t understand why you want to act like nothing happened. It did happen. And I can only assume, because you haven’t left the house, that I am the father.” Mason said.

I sighed, wiped my face, and took a deep breath. “I will leave tomorrow, go somewhere far so that you can’t see me, or probably go to my parents. I will leave.”

“Leave? Why would you leave?”

I sobbed and wiped the tears that refused to stop. “You are not even sure it’s yours.”

“Sure enough to know that I am the one that broke your virginity under my roof.”

I turned toward him my eyes filled with more tears. “Regardless, I will leave.”

“What?”

“I am afraid, but we can . . .”

He stood from the bed immediately and covered his ears. “God, just stop talking. You are making it worse the more you do, goddamn.” He cursed and covered his face.

The door opened, and the doctor walked in, looked at both of us, and frowned. “Is there a problem?”

“No, Doc,” Mason muttered as he walked towards the table, sat, and folded his arm while the doctor moved toward me.

“Why are you crying?” the doctor asked.

I took a deep breath and wiped the tears while clearing my throat. “Because I asked you not to say anything, until I knew what I wanted to do.”

“What do you mean know what you want to do?” Mason asked surprisingly.

“Exactly what I said. It’s my body, and I am fine. It’s just a lot to take in. But it’s okay.”

The doctor turned between Mason and me, “You should stop straining yourself further. Your body needs as much care as it can afford. Thank God the family called when they did. You were so dehydrated and unwell, likely from morning sickness. But you should start feeling better once these medications start kicking in.”

“Fucking hell.” Mason cursed and turned away while running his hands through his hair. “This is unbelievable.”

“Is there anything else I need to know around here?” The doctor turned to Mason and asked, but when an answer was forthcoming, he turned towards me and sighed. “Is this the baby’s father?”

“God.” I began to cry again and turned my gaze away.

“Oh well,” The doctor muttered, turned toward Mason, and sighed. “Didn’t have a clue.”

“Promise me no other ears will hear this.”

“I—”

“Doc!!!”
