I sat on the foot of the bed then, unable to control the tears.

“Enough.” Mason’s calm but firm voice ordered as he came into the room.

“Yeah, you came in just in the nick of time, fucking my best friend behind my back is, well, of course, the peak of this fucking shit show.” Ella cried.

“Come on, sweetheart.” Eve said, making her way into the room too, “It’s not what you think.”

“So, you know, too, Mom? Wow! Whose side are you on? So, everybody knows, including the birds, the dogs, and the horses, all except me, the sister and alleged best friend.”

“Enough, Ella,” Mason repeated, this time, his voice a little louder.

“Well, I am done. I am fucking done with all this and all of you!” Ella shouted and stormed out of the room.

“Wait up, angel, you can’t leave like that.” Eve cried as she followed her raging daughter and left the room.

I curled into the bed burying my head beneath the pillow, and continued crying.

“Don’t worry. She will be fine,” Mason muttered.

He reached his hands out to touch me, but I moved away from his touch immediately. “Please leave me alone.”

“Come on, Lucy. You can’t just—”

“Leave me alone!!!” I shouted as I buried my face deeper into the pillow.

After a moment, I heard his footsteps getting further away, and then I heard the door open and close. I knew I was now the only person in the room.

I lifted my head from the pillow, looked at the door, and sighed. This was it, I thought. Things had gotten so bad, and I didn’t have the guts to look them in the eyes again.

I decided that I was going to leave and get as far away from them as possible. But first, I need to write a letter to Ella. I hurt my best friend in the worst way possible. The tears started to fall freely as I picked up a pen and started the write things down. My life will never be the same again, nor will theirs. It is better for everyone with me gone. I am hoping they find a way to heal and forgive me, even though I was sure I would never forgive myself.

I finished the letter and placed it on the nightstand for them to read once I was gone. I know for a fact that I cannot go home. My parents are going to be so disappointed in me, their only daughter. Besides, Ella knows where I live, and I don’t want to be found, not now.

I picked up my phone and dialed a familiar number. He answered on the second ring, “Hello, my favorite niece, how are you doing?” he asked.

“Uncle Gabe? I am in trouble and need your help,” I said as I started to cry knowing that my uncle would have my back, no matter what.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

MASONBLACKWOOD

“What do you mean she’s not at her place or her parent’s home?” I shouted, gripping the phone tightly to my ears as I paced the length of the sitting room.

“Yeah,” Steve, the private investigator, said with a shaky voice over the phone. “I have been on the lookout at her apartment for the past two days, and the doors remain locked. I asked around, and the neighbors said she’s yet to return after leaving with her roommate Ella.”

“God,” I screamed, “this is unbelievable!” I scratched my head. “How about her family in Tennessee?”

“Yes, I went there after I didn’t succeed in their apartment. Pretty much the same thing, only saw the parents move in and out, asked around, and they said they haven’t set eyes on the girl.”

“What about her younger brother?”

“Didn’t catch a glimpse of that one. Do you want me to confront the parents?”

“Yes . . . No . . .” I shouted back, folding my hand into a fist. “That will be a disaster.”

“What’s the order then, sir?”

I closed my eyes and paused momentarily, wondering what action to take. I sighed, opened my eyes, and took a deep breath. “You know what? Just stay there. I will make some calls and see what I can find out.”
