Dad paused momentarily, looked at me, spat on his hand, and shook Uncle Gabe’s hand. “Satisfied now?”

“Yes, yes, of course.” Uncle Gabe said and took his hand away. He reached for a tissue in his pocket and cleaned his hand. “I will be going, then. I have some very important places to be.”

“It wasn’t a pleasure.” Dad scoffed.

“Too bad.” Uncle Gabe moved closer to me, and just as I was about to stand, he stopped me and patted my shoulder while smiling. “I told you he would come around. Now wipe your eyes, and make sure you stay happy always.”

I forced a smile and wiped my tears. “Thanks, Uncle.”

“Does it mean you have agreed to name him Gabe after me?” Uncle Gabe asked while winking.

“We are not sure if it’s a boy or girl yet.”

He nodded. “It’s definitely a boy.”

“I will think about it then.”

“Beautiful,” Uncle Gabe said as he turned and clapped before turning toward Mom. “Goodbye, Mrs. Edwards. I have a lot of respect for you, keeping up with that bear beside me.”

Mom smiled and patted my arms. “He comes around now and then.”

“On very few occasions, right?”

Dad groaned beside us, “Will you just leave already?”

“And jealous too, God, my brother doesn’t stop, does he?”

“I thought you said there’s somewhere important you need to be?”

“Yes,” Uncle Gabe said while standing, “See you guys then, and just please have my number on speed dial just in case my brother becomes all feisty again.”

“That’s it. I have heard enough,” Dad groaned as he reached forward, grabbed Uncle Gabe by the arm, and dragged him to the door.

“This is an illegal, abuse of human rights.”

“God, you speak too fucking much,” Dad shouted as he continued to drag his brother outside while Mom and I smiled.

Dad shoved him outside, and just as he was about to close it, Uncle Gabe put his leg between the door and snuck his head inside. “I didn’t get to say my goodbyes.”

“You missed the chance,” Dad muttered and began to push his head away from the door till he succeeded. “Fucking hell,” Dad muttered as he took a deep breath and wiped his palm.

“I forgot my shoe inside.” Uncle Gabe shouted while knocking hard on the door. “Anybody home?”

Dad opened the door with fury and pointed at him. “A minute more, and I will get my hunting rifle and chase you to the ends of the Earth.”

“Holy cow.” Uncle Gabe turned and ran toward his car. A few moments later, we heard it start, the horn honking, and make its way out of the driveway.

Dad took a deep breath and banged the door closed, startling us. After a moment, he turned and glared at me. “You?”

“Honey,” Mom said softly, and soon Dad sighed, shook his head, and moved out of the sitting room.

I felt relieved, wiped my face, and turned to Mom. “Thanks for allowing me to stay, Mom.”

“We can’t throw you out now, can we? Come on, let’s go to your room. Lucky enough, it’s still open and cleaned up.” Mom stood and helped me up.

I smiled wearily and held her by the hand, “I’ll get my bags.”

“No, leave it. Your brother will be home soon. He’ll get them when he comes back. Right now, you need to go and lie down. It’s been rather stressful for you, so you should rest.”
