Mom shook her head. “Can you please just slow down and let her be for now, honey?”

“Of course, I am taking things slowly. Did you hear me raise my voice or say something out of place?”

“You are unbelievable, honey. You didn’t even ask her how she slept.”

Dad turned his gaze on me. “How did you sleep then?”

“I slept fine, Dad.”

He clapped excitedly. “I think that settles it then, huh? So, tell me what I want to know.”

I sighed and moved away from Mom’s warmth.

I took a deep breath and turned towards Dad. “Okay, fine. I will tell you. Remember my friend I told you about?”

“Friend?” Dad asked, frowning. “I don’t know about any friends.”

“My roommate,” I said quickly.

“I thought she’s a girl?” Dad asked, turning to Mom, “What’s her name again, Lab—”

“Ella.” Mom interjected.

“Yes, of course,” Dad replied with a nod, “Please continue.”

I sighed and continued, “She asked me if I could help her prepare for a party her brother was hosting at his home, and also to draw a portrait of her mother.”

“And?”

I sighed and turned to Mom, and she nodded for me to continue smiling assuredly.

I turned toward Dad again. “A spark flew between me and her brother and . . .” I closed my eyes, unable to finish it.

“What’s the name of his brother? If I may ask?”

“I don’t want to return to them, Dad,” I whispered gently.

Dad raised his hand and nodded. “All right, I won’t force you to, but I need to know his name.”

“Mason,” I whispered, closing my eyes as the words slipped out of my mouth.

“Mason, what?” Dad asked, his voice louder than before.

I opened my mouth to speak when we heard a knock on the door. I turned my gaze towards it as my body filled with anxiety, the same way that I felt whenever I was close to Mason.

Dad looked at the door and looked at me. “Ignore it. What’s his full fucking name.”

The knock came again, frustrating Dad more. “Who the fuck is that?” He groaned as he turned over to Joe. “Stop gawking like a fool and go answer the door.”

Joe nodded as he dropped his phone and ran to the door while we all turned toward it.

Joe opened it, and his eyes went wide with shock. He turned to Dad and began to drag his feet backward while opening the door slowly.

As if weighing his steps, Mason walked into the house, his hands deep in his pockets as he turned towards us.

Dad stood angrily and pointed at him. “You again, Mr. Blackwood, I told you I was not going to sell, and I didn’t want to see you step foot in this house again.”

Surprised, I turned toward Mom, trying to know what was happening.
