He chuckled and turned away. “It didn’t work, but we tried to buy the land where his farm was located, but he didn’t budge. I came here myself and offered him fifty million dollars for it, and he sent me out with a warning never to come here again or see his face.”

“You what? You tried to buy my family's farm? Of all of the places, you chose MY family. And you offered fifty million dollars?” I closed my eyes and covered my face, frustrated.

“Why are you doing this? Haven’t you done enough already,” I asked looking at my slowly growing belly, rubbing it gently.

“And, to think, now I have gotten his daughter pregnant, isn’t it funny?”

“What is funny about this situation? Why did you want my family's farm? And because he said no, you decided you would hit him where it hurts. So, you got me pregnant just to get back at him?”

He scoffed and shook his head. “Lucy, I may be awful, but fuck, I am not that dirty. I didn’t know you were his daughter when I came to Tennessee to try to buy him out. James had not succeeded in closing the deal, plus I needed a distraction from you. When I was sitting here in your living room, waiting for your father to come inside, I was looking at the family photos. That’s when I saw your face.”

“So, you are saying I was the one who made you act like an asshole towards my dad?”

“You know.” Mason moved toward the pictures. “You could have been like your mom instead of your dad.”

I sighed, brought my knees closer to myself, turned toward him, and sighed. “How is Ella?”

He turned toward me, rested his back on the shelf, and sighed. “Pretty bad. Moved to the visitor’s suite and will barely speak with anyone.”

A tear slipped out as I turned toward him. “Do you think she will ever forgive me?”

“I know she will, but first, you need to come back home. Mom is going nuts with worry.”

“Home?” I muttered, “But I am home.”

“Your second home, if that’s how you want to recognize it.”

“You are doing this only because I am pregnant with your child.”

“And because somehow,” he said, looking at me with a look of frustration, “somehow, you have become the link that held my family together after so many years of being apart. Right now, everything has fallen off so bad it’s making me nervous.”

“I can’t, Mason.” I cried, wiping the tears from my eyes, “I betrayed Ella’s trust, betrayed my parents' trust. Can’t you see? I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

He reached forward and grabbed my arm. “Then allow me to try to help you, that’s all I ask. Just give me a chance to make it right by you, nothing more.”

The door opened, and Dad stepped in, furious. “Your time is up, Mr. Blackwood now, please get off my property.”

“Just give me a second, sir,” Mason begged, not moving his gaze from me. “Will you please come back with me?” He asked.

“You said your piece, you had your five minutes, now get the hell out of my house! Dad shouted and grabbed Mason’s arm, but Mason forced it away from him.

“Get your freaking hands off me,” he shouted, adjusting his clothes.

“Get out,” Dad shouted, pointing to the door. “Get out of my house and off of my property.”

“I will leave, but I assure you this is not the last time you will see me.”

“I will buy a gun and wait for you then.” Dad threatened, “Now leave my house.”

Mason paused at the door, took another look at my face, and walked out of it.

I started to cry softly as Mason walked out. Dad turned and pointed at me. “Stop crying right this minute, Lucy. You don’t need someone like that in your life. You need us and that’s all there is to it.”

“Dad!” I cried, covering my face.

“Honey, you really need to bring control to yourself,” Mom muttered as she moved toward me and hugged me tightly.

“You want our daughter, and our grandchild to be gone and living with that man? Did you hear what he said to me?”
