I sat up, covered my face, and took a deep breath while trying to think about what the dream meant.

A ding from my phone had me turning to look at it. I picked it up and first looked at the time. It was already eight o’clock. I must have really needed the sleep, as I am usually up and gone by now.

I stood and walked toward the bathroom and started the shower. I stepped into the hot shower, trying to clear my mind from the continuous nightmares I had been having. The hot water felt refreshing.

I returned to my room while changing into new clothes. I put on a pair of jogging pants, but they felt loose on the waist, a sign I was getting thinner.

I sighed, tightened the waistband string, and threw on a plain black t-shirt. I began to walk toward my table to work when a soft knock on the door had me turning.

I wiped my eyes, moved toward the table, and opened my laptop to see if there was good news while ignoring the constant knocking on the door, hoping whoever it was would go away.

The knock persisted until I sighed and moved toward it. I opened the door to find Mom standing outside while looking like she didn’t have a good sleep as well.

“Morning, Mom,” I whispered, turning back to head into the room.

“I have been knocking for a while,” Mom replied as she followed me in.

“I didn’t know it was you. I just wanted whoever it was to go away. Not in the right mood to talk to people right now,” I replied as I began to reach my working table.

“Well, I think this would interest you.”

I looked at her. “I doubt that. Not much I would be interested in.”

“First, you have to reconcile with your sister. Then we proceed on how best to get back Lucy.”

I scoffed and sat behind the table. “Not interested. Ella made it abundantly clear over time that she doesn’t want anything to do with me, not now or ever.”

Mom reached the table and placed her hand on it. “She told me that too, but well, she’s your sister. Besides, I told her I wouldn’t bring her anymore nice gifts from my travels if she didn’t start talking to you,” Mom said with a bit of a mischievous smirk on her face.

I raised my head from the laptop and glared at her. “Wow! That is a huge threat you made there,” I replied to her, shook my head in disbelief, and found myself smiling a little bit.

“What do you expect me to do?” Mom spread her hands wide. “Ella doesn’t want to speak to or see me again. Bribing her with not giving her nice gifts is the only way to get through to her,” Mom said with a bit of a smile. But then her smile left her face and changed to worry. “And you. You are doing nothing but sleeping, making calls, and locking yourself up inside your room. And my daughter-in-law has left with my grandchild. So, tell me, how do you think I will handle all of this?

“Daughter-in-law?” I asked, frowning even though I loved the thought of that.

“Yes, of course, no grandchild of mine will be born out of wedlock, and I know you have enough good reasons to agree to marry her.”

I shrugged and stretched. “I am not so sure that it is that simple. Lucy does not care about any of this, money, none of it. She would prefer to stay with her own family, which I can understand, I suppose.”

“And since you have run out of ideas on how to get her back, I think we need to come together and do so as a family, but not when we are barely talking to each other. So first, we all need to reconcile and settle our differences.”

“And what does Ella have to say about this reconciliation?”

“She’s actually waiting in the parlor for us to start after I have proven to her how serious I was about my threat.”

“Don’t tell me you were serious when you talked about not bringing gifts to your precious baby girl?” I said as I rolled my eyes.

“Maybe, but right now, the most important thing is to talk with Ella first, then we know how to proceed with the others.”

I took a deep breath and began looking at the screen, slightly confused but determined to do anything to try to get Lucy back.

“Are you not coming?”

I closed the laptop and stood, “Do I have any other choice?”

“Unfortunately, not,” Mom replied as she hooked her arm with mine. Smiling, she led me out of the room.
