“Ella just texted,” I shouted, exiting the room as fast as my feet could go.

*******

I screeched to a stop in front of the Edwards’ house and frowned. Their driveway was filled with vehicles.

But the one that caught my attention was a black van with a security inscription of our private security outfit.

There were two men in suits whom I couldn’t recognize outside the van, but the other vehicles were empty.

I wiped the sweat from my face and increased my steps towards the house. Upon reaching the door, I knocked and waited impatiently when Lucy’s Dad opened the door.

“And here comes the boss,” Mr. Edwards cursed and stood. “Do you people have nothing better to do with your fucking time? Who else am I going to see, the fucking grandfather?”

I ignored Mr. Edwards rant and stepped inside to make out the faces of those inside. First was Ella, who was sitting close to a terrified Lucy.

Also, there was Lucy’s mother, hands folded, sitting on the other side of Lucy. The others were Mom, who was standing beside James, who looked flustered but happy to see me.

“Son, how come you are here?” Mom asked as she stood and began to make enough space for me.

I scratched my jaw and frowned.

I ignored everyone and moved straight toward Lucy, who looked a little rattled seeing me. Slowly, she started inching away from me, moving closer to Ella.

“What’s going on here?” I asked before turning toward James. “What are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be on a vacation or something?”

“Sir . . .” James began, stuttering, “I came in to finish the deal.”

I frowned and looked at him. “What do you mean you came to finish the deal?”

“The farm you told me to buy.” He scratched his head. “While on vacation, I made some inquiries and found another way to get it.”

Surprised, I turned around the room to find all eyes looking at me before turning my gaze back to James, “What farm?”

James turned toward Mr. Edwards and pointed at him. “His.”

“Fucking hell.” I turned away from him, unsure I heard right. “Didn’t I tell you to get your hands off the fucking deal and allow me to handle it on the night of the party after you told me he still refused to sell?”

James was looking surprised now. “But, sir, I found a new way. ”

“What fucking happened to not proceeding further with the deal just like I told you?”

“I heard he refused your money too, sir.” James muttered, scratching his head, “I was furious and believed he was playing a trick on us.”

“What?” Mr. Edwards groaned. “What fucking tricks? I told you I wasn’t going to sell, and you went behind my back and bribed the mayor. How is that my fault? Now you threaten my family with some fucking bullshit lawsuits.”

James stared at him and turned back to me. “I am just trying to do right by you and get into your good graces again while saving you millions.”

“I told you that I would handle this, James. When I tell you I will handle it, I will fucking handle it!”

“I . . . I . . .” James looked around, worried, and he wiped his face nervously, “I thought, I thought you would be happy.”

I clenched my fists and snarled at him, “On whose fucking orders were you working?” I shouted, startling everybody in the room.

“I . . . I am sorry,” James cried.

I pulled my phone out of my pants pocket and dialed my secretary’s number. She picked it up a second later, “James Simmons has been fired—”

James looked shocked as he moved toward everybody close by, “Sir? I don’t understand. This is what you wanted.”
