Page 39 of Saving Becky

“Yep. I wouldn’t plan on any alone time in the near future,” he said cheerfully.

“Great,” Becky groaned.

But she was strangely okay with that scenario because the alternative would leave her alone and vulnerable, two things she was never very fond of. And after this weekend, she was even less enthused to be alone.

“Jac’s. Ivy and Kaden are gone, remember.”

“Yes, but they will be home tonight if you’d like Sharlee or Jac to run you to their house.”

“I’m good.”

“Okay, we’ll go to Jac’s then.”

“Just drop me off so you don’t have to use up any more of your day. Thanks for coming to get me, Garrett.”

“Sweetheart, I’m your watchdog until your Daddy comes home. Didn’t he tell you?”

“No.”

“Sorry, but that’s the way it’s going to be. I don’t mind watching Jac’s big-ass television, but I’m sure you would have instead done something else.

Great, just great. Now she had Jac, Sharlee, and Garrett keeping watch. She guessed she could even count Finley if she needed to even the numbers. Life had just gotten more complicated than she had ever wanted it. The tears were never far from the surface, but she had been able to keep them at bay... so far.

Her cell rang. “Carter?”

“Hey, Baby Bear. I only have a minute, but I had to break away to hear your voice. Are you with Garrett and are you okay?”

“Yes. And I don’t get to go home.”

“I know sweetheart. I’ll be home as soon as I can.”

“Okay.”

“Sorry baby, I have to go. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

Mini Fort Knox is what Jacquard Reynaud lived in, but he refused to admit it was overboard. The security guards at the entrance of the property had been waiting for them because when Garrett drove into the entrance drive, the gate opened automatically, and they waved as the car passed them. Sharlee met the two of them at the door.

Her boss’s words echoed in her head as got out of Garrett’s car. “My family will always feel safe here. The one with my name and the one I have created through blood, sweat, and tears. I’m unwilling to lose any of them through lack of safety measures.”

That same Jac met them at the door behind his wife, Sharlee. Becky loved working for Jac and being part of the team-based family he’d created. The sense of belonging was none she had ever experienced or seen anywhere else, but after talking to Nick Sharp a little, she thought it might be that way with his people.

“Rebecca, let me know what is happening as you see it. What did you do at your parents’ house? Jessie told Mark it had to do with accounting and inventory?”

“Okay, can’t a girl get a cup of coffee before she has to bare her soul?”

“Saucy today, aren’t you?”

Garrett followed with her computer bag and her overnight case. “All morning.”

“Yeah, well, you would be too if, instead of having an easy visit with your folks, you ended up with a weird uncle, crazy inventory, bombs, and G-men everywhere.”

“G-men?” Jac and Garrett laughed.

“Hey, this G-man bought you breakfast.”

“Thank you for breakfast, mean ol’ G-man. He threatened to spank me.”
