Page 6 of Saving Becky

“Honestly,” said Sharlee, “it doesn’t mean anything. It means you have too many hormones to count, and everything seemslike it could turn into a Greek tragedy. Have some chocolate. It helps.”

“Are you kidding? If I show up with chocolate breath when Mark has been so careful that I eat only specific things these last couple of months, he will kill me. He’s worried the baby won’t gain the right weight, and if I eat junk, it will predispose him or her to battle fat cells. When I am healed from all of this, it will take a week before I can sit without a cushion, anyway.”

Sharlee laughed. “Nothing you aren’t used to.”

“No, thank you. I’m waiting on unencumbered sex, and if I have to have a spanking before... oh... hand over the chocolate.”

Becky wondered why Carter couldn’t take charge of her more like his friends were with their spouses and girlfriends. Not that denying her chocolate would ever be okay, but still. She didn’t need a bully because she would never stand for that, but sometimes...

But that wasn’t Carter these days, and it seemed like it never would be again. She dreamed of the day that Carter would again take over for her. Not allow her to do for herself unless he agreed to it. She could give it all over to him and take a break. After a long day of dealing with work, sometimes she wanted that. Badly. She wondered if he’d ever be that person again and if she would be okay if he never was.

Carter’s size, deep voice, and ability to practically snap people in half made him overly passive in social situations, and she knew it. But he seemed to have so much control, and every part of his life couldn’t do this. It would fit so much into his caring mentality. She and the other ladies would have dinner at Ivy and Kaden’s house. The guys were going to go over to Jac’s. Maybe she would bring this up tonight with the ladies and see if they had any good ideas that wouldn’t get them all sitting carefully.

She spent the rest of her break playing with the baby, discussing Jessie’s new baby plans and Mallory’s recently announced, who was still in the puking stage of pregnancy. Evidently, being a pharmacist didn’t always help.

As Becky left to go back to the front desk, her cell was ringing, and her step got bouncier. That had to be Carter, and when she looked at her phone, she grinned. “Hey, where are you?”

“Looking for my wayward Baby Bear. She was supposed to be hard at work, but when I came to whisk her away, she was nowhere to be found.”

“I took a break.” She stepped into the room. “But I’m back. Jac is appointment free this afternoon so I can go when you’re ready.”

Carter opened his arms at the entrance to the office, and Becky walked into them. He was like a drug she never wanted to stop taking. His comforting hug absorbed the worry and fears of life without him. She released a sob that she tried to stifle, and she felt his hand slide behind her neck, under her shoulder-length hair.

“Hey, Baby Bear, it’s okay. Daddy’s here. No worries, I’ve got you. Daddy has to talk to Jac a little to bring him up to speed and then we’ll go home and make this mess all feel better.”

She nodded. “Uh-huh. I have to clear things up at my desk and set up for tomorrow, anyway.” Carter waited until Becky began to pull away before releasing his hold on her. His kiss was gentle and claiming, just what she needed, causing her knees to grow weak with desire. He turned her in the direction of her desk with a playful swat while he headed in the direction of Jac’s office beyond.

Carter rapped on the open doorframe and Jac immediately told him to come in. “Close the door.”

Carter had a seat in front of Jac’s desk. “Had a little adventure. If you wanted to go camping, we could have made a group trip of it.”

Carter smiled. “Yeah, a spur-of-the-moment thing.”

“Well, those aren’t authorized, so cut it out,” joked Jac. His face grew serious. “So, what happened up there?”

By the time they were wrapping the conversation up, the mechanic called. “Hey, Sam. What’s the verdict?” Carter’s expression hardened and he sat up. “Hold on. I’m putting you on speaker. I’m with Jac.”

“Hey, Jac. Yeah, like I was saying, I suspect sabotage, but can I prove it? Probably not. See, the wiring to the internal GPS seems tampered with causing you to be off course a little when it vibrated loose, and that’s what you found in the field. Luckily that was all that happened. The potential for greater damage was much worse because many of the wires and connectors were loose. I checked it myself after the last flight and I did an in-depth review of all systems. They weren’t loose.”

“Right, now what?” asked Jac.

“We fix it. It will take a while, so you aren’t going to use your plane, Carter, until I’m done.”

“Understood. Knowing what could have happened... well, you take your time,” said Carter.

“Any way can we know if someone accessed the hangar?” asked Sam.

“We’re a security company, we have eyes on everything except the bathrooms,” said Jac. “The bigger problem now is whoever did it had a keycard, otherwise our sensors would have been going off. I think we upgrade security around there.”

“Might be a good idea,” said Sam. After a little more discussing and planning the call ended.

Carter said, “Grabbing Bec and going home.”

Jac nodded. “See you two tomorrow.”

Carter swooped Becky into his embrace, walking to the garage. “When we get home, drop your clothes and stand in the corner like the naughty girl you are.”

“What?”
