Two weeks went by fast.

Or maybe it was a blur.

All that sex.

My vagina would never recover, but it was worth it.

I was half-heartedly focused on the book I was reading, but my mind wandered like a lost duck. A knock at the door had my heart leaping with the hope that it was Oliver, but when I opened the front door, it was a florist delivering flowers.

I figured they were from Phillip to Jaymee because they were always celebrating weird anniversaries, like the first time they ate Chinese food together or the first time they farted in front of each other, but to each their own. Their weirdness seemed to work for them.

But as I checked the card, I saw they were for me from Oliver. Immediately, I felt all warm and gushy inside. Oliver was the most thoughtful person on the planet. I was still waiting for the shoe to drop and find out he was a mass murderer or something.

So far, the FBI hadn’t dropped in on us, so that was a good sign.

Jaymee popped into the room, a bag of microwave popcorn in her hand. She stopped to exclaim at the display and then settled into the oversized chair for the details. “I’m assuming these are from Oliver?”

I nodded. “He’s so sweet. I can’t seem to find his dark, unmentionable spots, which I think might be a red flag.”

Jaymee quirked her face in confusion. “Huh? You want him to have some serious, scary flaws?”

“Well, maybe not scary, but, so far, he’s been way too good. No one is that good.”

“Some people are,” Jaymee disagreed, popping some corn into her mouth. “Maybe you’ve just had horrible luck with guys, and they’ve colored your view of men.”

“Okay, fair point, but c’mon, even Phillip has issues, and he’s a great guy. When did you find out that Phillip was into golden showers?”

Jaymee tossed popcorn at me. “No fair, it happened once. He’s not into golden showers as a fetish, you weirdo. But even if he were, I wouldn’t care. Everything else about him is awesome, so what’s a fetish or two? It’s pretty harmless, and nowadays, everyone has some kink.”

“You are the most chill individual I know. How are we friends? I think I practically vibrate with anxiety about everything.”

“That’s your problem, doll. You need to learn how to relax, take a chance, go wild for once.”

“I did. I’ve never hooked up with a guy at a party before. Look at me now, having wild monkey, no-attachments sex with a guy who’s leaving in a few days to go back to his life. I’m totally fine with it, too.”

Jaymee gave me a look that told me she knew I was bluffing because Jaymee knew me better than anyone. It turns out I wasn’t very good at the no-attachment thing. I wanted to be attached to Oliver, but I had to find a reason to keep my distance.

“I like him,” I admitted with a sheepish frown. “What is wrong with me? I know you never get attached to the rebound guy. He’s supposed to be a fun bridge to the next person who might be worth getting attached to, but I can’t seem to get Oliver off my mind. This is why I have to find his flaw, and hopefully, it’s big enough that it will completely turn me off, and I can walk away without blinking an eye.”

“You have a habit of complicating things that should be very simple,” Jaymee said dryly. “Seriously, Bird, if you like him, you like him. It doesn’t have to be more layered than that. I slept with Phillip on our first date. I haven’t regretted it once. Rules are meant to be broken because some rules are stupid.”

“Coming from the woman who chafes at most rules, that doesn’t surprise me,” I returned. “But I like rules. Rules keep us from devolving into chaos. I don’t like messy situations.”

“Life is messy, Bird. I would’ve thought you’d figured that out by now.”

“Yeah, and I hate it.”

Jaymee chuckled, finishing her popcorn bag before saying, “Look, usually I’m a hands-off kind of girl when it comes to other people’s business, but you’re my bestie, and you deserve a good guy after that shithead Roger. I can promise you what you see is what you get with Oliver. To be honest, I think he’s a little boring, but that’s exactly what you like.”

Boring? Oliver could never bore me. Our sex life alone could keep me on my toes for the rest of our lives. Jaymee had unreal expectations if she thought people were supposed to have sex swings installed in their bedroom or be prepared to jump in the car at a moment’s notice to go white-water rafting to keep things interesting.

“I can promise you he’s not boring,” I said, feeling defensive. Jaymee grinned with knowing. “Argh, I hate that you know me so well. Sometimes it’s a real pain in the ass.”

“I’m also a touch empathic, so hiding things from me is really difficult,” she said with a shrug. “However, back to you…what are you going to do?”

My gaze drifted to the gorgeous blooms, and my heart melted a little against my will. “I don’t know,” I answered. “Let him go, I guess?”
