I jump when I hear the glass shatter downstairs, Gideon’s rage pulsing through me distantly. I lick my lips, pushing the urge to rush downstairs to him away, and grab the silver communicator.

Any updates?

Jules texts back almost immediately.Yes, but it’s not good.

I rub a hand over my forehead, running my fingers through my hair. What is it?

Mom’s loyalty was questioned at a coven meeting. She volunteered to lead the hunt.

“Shit,” I mutter under my breath.

I want to stay with you, Addy. Please.

No,I send. You have to stay there. Safe and hidden. Chloe will help you. Keep me updated. Love you.

Addy…

I blink back my tears, my heart aching to see Jules and know she’s okay, to hear her laugh and see her smile. But knowing the coven sent out the bounty hunters is enough to keep me in hiding. They’re ruthless and powerful… and I’m…

What am I?

A stubborn princess?my wolf offers.

Setting the communicator down with a scowl, I take in my hands, staring at my palms. Am I powerful? Kaylus swoops in through the window, landing in his nest, and I jump.

“Well, that was a show. Is it your time of the month or something?”

I swat at him, and he caws.

“What? You were the one acting like your hormones were in control.”

I laugh despite myself. “I can’t stand you.”

“You need me, and you know it.”

“I just don’t know how to do all this.” I wave my hand around the room, and he tilts his head. “Believe in myself. In Gideon. Inthis. He said that my spells before didn’t work because my fire was too powerful, but that can’t be it. Why wouldn’t the coven have trained me for it?”

“If Monique told them you were useless and had no power, they would’ve believed her without question, Addy.”He tilts his head the other way.“They wouldn’t have bothered testing you if she never told them. Plus, fire magic hasn’t been seen in centuries. They would’ve thought it impossible.”

“Right. Of course she would do that,” I scoff. “Just like she knows Jules is gifted but won’t send her to the academy. How could I be so stupid and naive?” My fingers curl into fists, and all I want is to scream. She’s taken so much from me, and now this too? All these lies, and they just keep building and building, growing until they teeter. I want to bury her beneath them and the carnage they’ll reap. It’s the least she deserves.

I hiss a breath as my nails lengthen into claws, piercing my palms slightly. Blood beads along the punctures, and I close my eyes, taking a deep breath. I reach out to my wolf, to the winter clearing from before, and find her lapping water from a small stream.

You seem different, she says, nonchalant at the changes she’s fully aware of.

“I want you to teach me.”

She lifts her head and looks back at me over her shoulder.Teach you?

“Yes,” I whisper. “I don’t want to control you. I want to learn.”

Pride pours off the black wolf before me, and I can’t help the smile that spreads across my face as I drop to my knees.

She pads forward and presses her forehead to mine, reminding me of Gideon when he held me just moments ago.

First…

The world spins around us, and I shut my eyes tightly, trying to swallow back the nausea and dizziness.
