Well, we settledthatmisunderstanding.

He hadn’t taken his eyes off me, “I missed you. Are you …?”

“Mmm-hmm …”

And without even paying attention to his sister or my brother, we pivoted in perfect synchronicity away from our siblings, andwalked down the street, past his office building, down a block and half, taking the long way into the park.

Somewhere along the way, Leighton took my tote from me and slung it on his shoulder.

Neither of us noticed that Roberta had a gigantic smile of triumph on her face, nor that she launched into an animated explanation of … something … to a very confused, open-mouthed Davie.

We never heard their delighted laughter ring out.

By the time we got into the park, my arm was around his waist and his around mine. We slowed and faced each other amid deep dappled afternoon light under some of the oldest trees in the city.

He looked me in the eyes, mere inches from my face, “I’ve been …”

“Me, too,” and he kissed me.

Facing each other, holding lightly onto each other, we kissed. Lightly. A gentle warm breath of his lips on mine. Again, and then again. Exploring the sensations of a first kiss.

Ooh, I’d never been kissed like this. Energy crackled between us.

“Wow.”

“Yeah. Yeah.”

Through the closeness and the kiss, I couldn’t stop looking at his eyes, his face. I reached up to palm his cheek as his hands feathered my spine up and down.

“Indian?” he asked when he’d wrapped his arms around me to hold me as close as physically possible. In public, that is.

“Mmm …” I took his lips in mine again.

Somehow we made it into an Indian restaurant he knew that was on the other side of the park.

As far as I was concerned, I would have gone to the other side of the moon with him.

Ready to have my fill.

Leighton

Ithought my heart would levitate right out of my chest.

Her …brother?! Oh, Happy Days!

Roberta who? I forgot that Roberta was there.

David? He faded from the picture before my eyes.

Seeing only Samantha, I floated up to her. Took her hands. She wasn’t. She could. We might. She wanted to. We did.

I’m not sure I remember quite how we got to the restaurant, or why that one.

She sat across from me with her beautiful, serene face gazing at mine. All those freckles. Like moondust across her beautiful face. Auburn hair that rivaled her eyes for brightness.

I think it was only when we both took a bite of whatever it was we’d ordered—and coughed our lungs up from the hottest, strongest spice I, for one, had ever eaten—that we came, somewhat, back down to earth.

Our coughing subsided and our laughter bubbled up at the ridiculousness of our situation.
