He did a little jig, by now dressed only in his boxers and socks, all the way to his sound system.

Next was some group, not American, called the Bee Gees,How Deep Is Your Love. After that, all of our undies except our socks disappeared.

Then he played the Carpenters,We've Only Just Begun. He said they were brother and sister.

My amazingly talented singing partner crooned both songs to me, holding me close, twirling me, and pulling me back in, singing in my ear, singing while looking deep into my eyes.

Singing to every part of me. Singing to parts of me I didn’t know I had.

“Baby, I’ve totally …”

“Darling, you’re melting me …”

“Leighton? … just mush. You …”

“Me, too, beautiful.”

At least we knew how the other one felt! No ‘failures to communicate’ in this relationship!

“One more dance, darlin’?”

I could barely speak I was so … “Mmm … socks!”

As the last song came to an end, Leighton leaned into me, our foreheads together, and whispered, “Socks. Together. We've only just begun.”

And, finally naked, with my arms around his neck, my fingers through his hair, and my lips locked on his, he carried me off to his bed.

True. We’d only just begun.

The days went by and I was relieved that Leighton had not only bounced back pretty quickly from the dehydration but been willing to eat and drink more consistently. He did pay attention.

I helped him, though, by making sure that he had a smoothie to take with him after every breakfast that he shared with me in the bakery kitchen. I also added a sandwich for his lunch.

Every time I packed the food up, I threatened, “Be very afraid, Mr. Absent-Minded Inventor! I have spies everywhere who will tell me if you don’t eat and drink what I give you!”

I thought about how far I’d come this year.

Still living with my brother and Jerry. But that was strategic and they were thrilled that I was starting my business.

Graduated from my culinary program and opened my bakery.

Survived the stalker.

Met a dreamboat of a man. Almost missed him (saved by interfering friends, thank goodness!) but together.

Thinking about the progress I’d made, I was nearly ready to go back to the Community Center. I had not told Leighton yet that, for some years now, I’d been one of their volunteer teachers of kickboxing to seven-year-olds.

When my burger-boy stalker didn't seem to want to leave me alone last winter, I told the director of the center that I was going to suspend my volunteer teaching for a while. I told her, “I simply cannot bring that risk of violence to the center and the kids. When it's all settled, I'll be back.”

However, the center director reminded me that I was also opening a new business soon. She simply told me, “Samantha, you dear, dear woman! Rest assured that the center has been around for many years. We’ll be around once you get your bakery up and running. Take your time with that. Get that stalker situation resolved. We’ll be here when you're ready again.”

At dinner one evening the following week, I told Leighton about my plan.

When I finished, and he’d asked a couple of questions, “I haven’t called the center director yet. I thought I would pop in tomorrow night at the seven-year olds’ class time to see her. Do you wanna come? It's a big piece of my childhood.”

“I want to know everything about you. Of course, I’ll come with you. But …”

He looked worried!
