I couldn’t take my eyes off my guy—again! How is it that I never seem to get my fill of this wonderful man?

The boys served up some no-buzz Egg Nog. Chit-chat. Bla-bla-bla.

Then the moment I’d been waiting for. I was as giddy as on the first Christmas I’d ever had.

I had gotten Leighton a simple gift. I had no idea what he had in mind for me. The only gift between us so far was my mini-scooter. We had recently decided together to donate it to the Community Center along with my wheelchair.

I had triple-gift-wrapped Leighton's gift. Outside it was in a gift bag. He pulled a wrapped box out of the bag. He unwrapped and opened the box. There was a decorative envelope in the box. He opened the envelope.

His mouth hung open and his eyes got bright. A smile crept onto his mouth.

“You didn't?!” He looked at the card again. “You did!” And he stood to do a jig in front of the three of us.

My brothers were opening their gifts and just sort of looked at Leighton with a smirk. I had not told them what I got him. They knew they would find out soon enough.

I had two boxes from Leighton. He handed me the first one. A long narrow box. It had three gorgeous, different-colored long-stemmed silk roses in them with gilded leaves along the stems and a golden envelope. I opened it up.

I looked at him with shock and awe! “You didn't?!” I looked down at the card again. “Yes, you did!”

Jerry teased, “Davie, my good man? I think our two lovebirds need English lessons. Their vocabulary has seriously shrunk recently.” And they both laughed at our expense.

I was speechless. All choked up.

Davie said, “Jerry, my love, our little girl is so ungrateful. Does she say thank you to the nice man? No, she doesn’t. Shecries.”

Leighton took me in his arms. “Don’t cry, beautiful. And never be afraid again. Looks like I’ll be learning how to defend my Lady Love from now on.”

Nodding and gulping, “Baby, I don’t know what to say.”

“Well, you can’t take advantage of my gift when you’re crying. It doesn't work that way.”

Jerry couldn't stand it anymore. “Okay, you love birds! What did you give each other? Inquiring minds want to know!”

I looked at my brother-in-law. “I got six 45-minute private singing lessons with the city's premier voice coach.Singinglessons, guys!!!”

What a great gift! I was over the moon! I burst into tears for good this time. But with a happy smile on my face.

Davie said, “Come on, Leighton. Give it up!”

Leighton looked over at the boys, “You guys betterwatchyourselves from now on. I have a one-year subscription to twice-weekly adult kickboxing classes at the Community Center down the road.”

He then comically struck his bodybuilding pose that always made me laugh.

Jerry and I exchanged a knowing nod and wink. He gave me a quiet thumbs-up and a big smile.

Jerry and Davie showed off their gifts. Then Jerry noticed, “Sammie! There's one more thing under the tree.”

Leighton scooped it up and gave it to me with a flourish. “The last one is also for you,” he announced.

I tore the box open and yet another envelope.

Tickets.

Truly speechless this time, I read the tickets three times. Looked up at Leighton between each reading.

And just sat there.

“Wow … Baby?”
