When I return to the lot, there are all types of obsolete vehicles, some with different parts. I run between the cars, trying to get as far as I can before anyone notices I’m gone.

I pull out my phone and dial, hoping Ethan still has the same number.

"H-hello?"

I smile. "Ethan," I breathe.

"Ican't believe you're here."

I glance at Ethan in his small car. "I didn’t think you would answer me, to be honest."

"I'll always answer for you. What were you doing at the arena?"

"I was tagging along."

"With who?" He glances at my hand, and I pull it away from his gaze. "You're married."

"Yep," I chirp. I don't want to go into the details, so I cover my wedding ring with my hand.

He drives the car, and we stop at an old strip mall with various spaces selling different items mixed with living spaces on top. It’s like one big mash-up.

One of the flashing neon signs catches my attention, and it looks like someplace where they conduct ancient rituals. I'm intrigued and want to go inside like it's calling me. I'm not superstitious or anything, but it could be fun.

It's better than watching my current husband pay attention to his side chick while I sit there and watch with my heart in my throat.

I point at the sign. "I want to go in there."

Ethan gives a little laugh. "Are you serious?"

I open the door. "Yeah, I'll be right back. You'll wait for me, right?"

"I'll be right here, Lillith. I won't leave you."

I smile warmly. "Thanks, Ethan."

I run across the street, avoiding people with their dirty clothes looking through the piles of debris. I reach the door and press the old, dimly lit button that makes a cracking sound.

Suddenly, a buzzer goes off. I pull the door open, and when I step inside, I cough at the weird smell of something burning.

"Hello?"

"I've been waiting for you, my dear." I pause, looking at an older woman sitting in the chair, staring straight ahead. I feel a rush of chills over my arms, and it's not even cold inside. I stare at her for about a minute, but she continues to stare straight ahead.

I wave my hand in front of her face. "I'm blind, not dumb, my dear. I can feel you."

Looking around the dirty shelves with candles burning and different symbols drawn on the walls under black lights, I glance back at the woman. "My name is—"

"Lillith."

How did she know that?A sudden awareness creeps over my skin. Like an electrical charge of energy causing my tiny hairs to spike.

I jolt when a black cat jumps on the table next to her with yellow eyes. It walks toward her and lies down. I didn't know people kept animals around anymore. Domesticated animals are banned from the island due to the spread of disease, but they are obviously allowed and kept as pets here.

"You can pet it, my dear. I'm sure your husband wouldn't mind getting you one."

There is no way she can see that I'm married unless she's full of shit and fucking with me. I reach out, and the cat rubs his head against my hand. I smile as I pet his head. His fur feels so soft and warm.

"They have a good judge of character, and it will be good to ward off evil. The kind that wants to destroy you and your husband." She points at the dusty old chair. "Have a seat. We have some things to discuss before he comes looking for you."
