"Because that is the way it has to be, Lillith. Your father knew your fate when I offered to bail him out. And besides, I would have no use for you." A stubborn tear escapes, sliding down my cheek from the corner of my eye.

"What if I can't do it?"

"Do what?" he snaps.

"Get pregnant."

"I doubt that will be a problem. You were very willing last night. The doctor gave me a full report and said you were fine. Now, I have work to do. You can see your way out."

"I hate you."

I look down at my left hand and swirl the ring with my thumb. I haven't eaten much since I refused to eat at the table. Agnes brings my meal to my room, and even then, I don't eat all of it.

My clothes are a bit loose and so is the ring he gave me when we got married. A marriage I regret, just like the feelings I started to have for the man in front of me.

"Good to know," he responds dryly. "You're just angry because I can't be the man in your little fairy-tale books. We’ve already been over this."

I walk toward his desk once again and place the ring on the glass, another stubborn tear sliding down my cheek. He slides his elbows off the desk and leans back.

"I’d rather cut off my fingers than wear your ring, and trust me, you will never be that man for me." I place the device that is both a phone and a way to pay for things on the desk, giving it back. "Keep it. I'm good."

I turn around and leave without a backward glance as my heart breaks into a million pieces.

Istare at the ring she placed on my desk for hours after she left like a projectile waiting to slice right through me, but in all honesty, it has. My indifference blew up in my face. She hates me, and I can't blame her.

I've treated her like total shit. I told myself I was doing the right thing in distancing myself from her, but I was fooling myself. The look in her eye and the two tears I wanted to wipe away with my lips were like a knife twisting in my gut, making sure the wound wouldn't close.

"What's up, brother?" Ciro asks, walking into my office and taking a seat.

I'm a horrible husband.

"Nothing."

I'm about to swipe the ring off my desk, but Ciro is quicker and picks it up. He holds it up in the light.

"Is this what I think it is?"

"My wife's ring."

I use the wordwifeto remind him that she is married to me, even if she regrets it.

It was like a punch in the stomach, hearing her tell me I'm the last man she would want to be married to and that I could never be that man. Last night, I tried to stay, but I knew if I did, I would end up falling in love with her, and it scared the shit out of me.

"Why isn't she wearing it?"

"She wants me to send it to be cleaned."

Ciro snorts. "I doubt that. What did you do?” I snatch the ring from his fingers and slide it into my pocket, hating he’s touching something that now belongs to her. But Ciro is a nosy motherfucker and looks over, raising his brow when he spots the phone and payment device I set up for her.

"Does she need that cleaned too?"

Dick.

I snatch the device away from him and hold it in my hand, knowing her dainty fingers touched it just moments ago.

"What do you need?"

"I need you to stop being an asshole to Lillith."
