It was just so weird and she was having a hard time understanding, but Stacy and her brother and Luis seemed very happy.

After they finished cleaning the kitchen, she pulled her keys from her pocket.

“I better go. I’ve got a few more cases to read before I turn in for the night.”

“Where are you staying?” her brother asked.

Oh dear, she didn’t want to lie to him, but she didn’t want to tell him the truth either. “I’m staying at that hotel on the edge of town,” she said, hating she was lying to him.

“You’re welcome to come stay with us,” he said. “Do you know how long you’ll be here?”

She didn’t. She’d never had a case like this one. Most of the time, she could solve them pretty quickly, but this one wasn’t coming together like she’d hoped.

“I don’t know. Until I solve this case or my boss calls me back to San Antonio,” she said.

“Why couldn’t you have become a lawyer? Then I wouldn’t worry about you so much.”

Trevor ran his hand through his hair and she reached out and hugged him.

“You know why. This is what I was meant to do in Alexis’s name,” she said.

“I know, but you scare me,” he said. “Be careful. Don’t trust Jim White and always be sure your weapon is on you.”

She grinned at him. Didn’t he know it was a requirement to always have her weapon with her?

“I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. You and your lovely wife and Luis have a wonderful honeymoon. And I can’t wait to bounce a niece or nephew on my knee.”

A big smile spread across his face. “It’s unbelievable how my life has changed. Maybe you should look for someone here in Blessing.”

How did she answer that? She’d already found two men that she frankly was smitten over the moon with. But she had to know for certain they weren’t involved in the dark side of this case.

“Maybe I will,” she said teasing. “Now, honestly, I have to go.”

She couldn’t wait to get back to the office and contact the FAA to see if there were records of planes leaving Jim White’s ranch.

“Love you,” she said and gave him a hug.

“Love you,” he said. “Be careful.”

“I will,” she replied as she walked out the door.

Outside, she glanced at the stars that sprinkled the Texas sky. This afternoon, her boss had let her know that the shirt she’d sent them had nothing on it except some spit-up. It proved nothing except that some kid had maybe hidden his shirt beneath the sink at the sheriff’s office.

She wondered if Jordan and Ely were still at the office or if they had returned to the ranch. She’d really like to sneak into the office and contact the FAA.

It would be best if they didn’t know she had learned that Jim White had a private airfield. It would be best if they didn’t know she planned on going out there tomorrow.

It felt like she had her first real suspect.

CHAPTER12

Jordan stayed up waiting for Camila to return. He had to know she was all right. Yes, it was probably childish, foolish, whatever you want to call it, but this was a dangerous case and he worried about her safety. He worried about another child being taken or even Camila being snatched.

If the bad guy was to learn who was on this case, he might try to take her and sell her, and that terrified Jordan. It was way too soon for his heart to get involved with this woman, but he cared about her. And that caused him to worry.

It was midnight when she walked into the house.

“Hi,” she said. “I didn’t expect you to wait up for me.”
