Liam and Zoey were totally off limits to each other when they first got together. She had an internship with the team, which forbid dating players. And her dad really didn’t like the idea of one of the hockey players with his daughter.

I mean, I kind of can’t blame him for that. The Hot Shots have a certain reputation, and it’s been fairly earned.

They snuck around her dad’s back for a while, and when he found out, he was pissed. Threatened to bench Liam and basically tank his whole career. But when the whole team stood up for him and put our own futures on the line, he realized that what Liam and Zoey have is real.

Now he practically considers Liam a son.

I wonder how Phoebe’s parents would feel if they knew that we were …

Together? Is that the right word? Are Phoebe and Itogether?

“Let me ask something,” Aaron declares, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Liam and Zoey have this dramatic story about how they got together. I keep hearing similar things about the older players who graduated last year. Listening to stories about their relationships is like hearing recaps of a soap opera. Does anyone on this team ever get into, like, a normal relationship?”

Liam and I laugh, thinking of the histories of the previous Hot Shots guys who are now in the NHL.

Blaze who fell for his tutor, Kay. Grant who finally fell for his best friend, Abby, when they had to pretend to be engaged. Cole with his best friend’s little sister. Tristan and Kennedy who hated each other at first. Ryder who was forced to move out of the Ice Box and fell for his roommate, Candace.

And now there’s me and Phoebe.

I don’t know what we are exactly, but whatever we are together, normalsure as fuck isn’t it.

Liam shrugs. “I guess not.”

After dinner, Phoebe and I head to my room to watch a movie. We’ve been spending the night at each other’s places more and more lately.

We watch the movie Planes, Trains, and Automobiles as we’re both in a festive mood with Thanksgiving around the corner. We laugh through the whole movie with her wrapped in my arms on my bed. Fuck, she feels so good. So warm with her back against my chest.

“You know what I want to do when we go back home for Thanksgiving break?” she asks.

“What?”

“When we all get together at Windmill,” she begins, referencing a popular bar in our hometown, the Windmill Tavern. Now that we’re all over twenty-one, everyone from our senior class who’s visiting home hangs out there to catch up on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. “I want us to play it cool for a while. Show up at different times, talk to our old friends like everything’s normal. Then, out of nowhere, we kiss.”

My chest heaves with a big belly laugh. “Holy shit. People will have heart attacks.”

Everyone in our year knew that Phoebe and I couldn’t stand each other, ever since before middle school.

Phoebe giggles. “I just hope Casey hasn’t told anyone yet and word hasn’t spread. I want to see the looks on everyone’s faces.”

“They’ll all be whispering to each other, saying,I knew she couldn’t resist her desire for Hunter forever. Who could?”

She grabs a pillow on the edge of my bed and smacks me with it.

I grab one of my own and return fire.

Suddenly, we’re in a pillow fight, giggling and yelping as we fling pillows at each other on my bed.

Soon enough, that pillow fight turns into me grabbing hold of her waist and tickling her until she shrieks with laughter.

That turns into us ripping each other’s clothes off, and me burying myself deep inside her, her warm thighs wrapping around my waist while she moans into my ear.

That turns into us falling asleep snuggled under my covers, wrapped in each other’s arms, and me having just about the best sleep of my life.
