I start to walk away, but he keeps pace with me. “Ah, come on,” he whines in a needy, entitled voice. “We can talk more if you want. Let me buy you a drink. Something strong, right, like vodka? It seems like you need to loosen up.”

I stop my stride, balking at him. He has even more audacity than I thought. “Ugh, I don’t think so.”

He expels a puff of breath as if he has the right to be frustrated. “So, you’re just gonna waste my time and walk away?”

The entitlement radiates off him. As if me silently putting up with his lazy, creepy attempts at a pickup was wastinghistime.

But I just throw a phony smile back in his face. “Sorry, but I think I am.”

I go to walk away from him, but he reaches out and snatches my wrist. I wiggle out of his slimy grasp. “Hey, don’t touch me!”

He steps forward, a scowl furrowing his face. “You know what the problem with girls like you is?”

I open my mouth to put this entitled jerk in his place—but the next voice I hear responding to his question isn’t my own.

“You know what the problem with guys likeyouis?”

The voice comes from a body standing next to me; a body I can sense is tall, broad, and rippling with muscle. The voice is low and gravely, broadcasting a confident strength. I turn my head to the side, and my eyes go wide when I see that it’shimstanding next to me.

The man with the skull face paint, the man whose eyes made time stand still for a couple heated seconds.

“The problem with guys like you is, you’ve got a big mouth when you think you’re talking to someone you can push around,” he continues, his eyes burning on the guy in the pirate costume who suddenly looks no more than three feet tall by comparison. “But when you’re talking to someone you know you can’t push around, you lose your voice. And you’re about to prove me right.”

The pirate opens his mouth, but it only hangs open silently. He stays frozen for a moment, unable to will a response. “Whatever,” he finally mumbles under his breath before stalking away with his tail between his legs.

With him gone, I tilt my head to gaze up at the man standing next to me.

Up close, the deep green of his eyes is even more striking. As are the straight lines and sharp angles of his face. Through the face paint, I can tell that his lips are pouty and luxurious. Above his brow is a thick head of dark black hair, swept backwards.

“Thanks,” I finally manage to say.

“Don’t mention it,” he says, his low voice making me feel like there are butterflies in my stomach. “I can’t stand douchebags like him.”

I nod. Right, of course. He’s just being a nice guy, coming to my rescue. It can’t be that a guy like him is actually interested in—

“You come here alone?” he asks, cutting off that train of thought.

I shake my head. “I came with my friend, but she’s off talking to some guy.”

A short chuckle rumbles from his throat. “Someone better than that asshole, I hope.” He nods his head to the side, in the direction the pirate retreated.

I smile. “I’m sure he is. Not that it’s a high bar to pass.” I let out a sigh, feeling the wind leave my sails. After that interaction, I’m kind of soured on the whole hookup mission. And no doubt Mr. Skull is eager to get back to the two angels who were all over him before he was nice enough to stick up for me. “I’m probably just gonna head home now.”

“Wait.” His response surprises me. I angle myself to face him again. His hard features are softened slightly by a smirk rising on his plush lips. “Let me buy you a drink first.”

LIAM

When our eyes first locked from across the room, it was like being struck by a lightning bolt.

Something about her made her stand out from the crowd, made her the only girl in this place to capture my attention, to seize my gaze with her eyes and make it impossible for me to look away.

Was it her costume? I don’t think so. It looks damn good on her, no doubt about that, but it’s kinda generic. Was it her looks? She’s smoking hot for sure, wearing a tank top that shows off her perky tits that I bet are the perfect size for my palms, and a short skirt that shows off her long, shapely legs.

But it wasn’t just her looks, either. There are plenty of girls in this place who are hot—but none of them have thatsomethingthis one has. None of them make my heart skip a beat just catching a glimpse of them from across a crowded room. None of them make me feel like a magnetic force is pulling me towards them. None of them can make the music stop when our eyes meet.

None, except her.
