“If my brother is the saintly man you claim, then you’ll have no trouble agreeing to be his wife for another six years.”

Van

Few people impress me. My brother isn’t one of them.

“Can I ask you a question?”

The walk home was far less amusing than earlier. Reese didn’t speak a word the whole way. At any other time, I would have enjoyed every delightful second. But her silence and droopy shoulders are carried with a brokenness I’ve never seen from her before.

“Depends.” I grit my teeth and fight the urge to grab her.

“On what?”

Every muscle in my body hurts as I stand behind her, keeping my hands at my sides.

“On if you can turn around and face me like you have some balls.”

I barely hear the tiny snort she lets out. “I hate to be the one to tell you this, lover, but I don’t have balls.”

“Bullshit.” I flip her around faster than either of us expected.

“You have bigger balls than most men I know.” She tries to smile, but it only results in a rogue tear streaking down her cheek.

“As my wife, I expect your honesty.”

She doesn’t move to wipe her face, and I don’t either. I’m too concerned that Tennyson took more than her freedom with his deal.

“Whatever you ask of me, I will give you the truth.” Even if it fucks with my head all night.

With a slight nod, she pulls in a ragged breath. “Tennyson was never going to kill him, was he?”

“The power of fear is evil’s greatest weapon. Fear can take down armies and control our greatest adversaries.”

“But no,” I continue, “Tennyson wouldn’t have killed him.”

She nods robotically, dropping my gaze. “Why didn’t you step in when he proposed the trade?”

I shrug lazily. “It wasn’t my delivery driver’s life at stake.”

“Six more years as your wife isn’t fair.”

“You, of all people, know life isn’t fair, Flower.”

She shakes her head in exasperation. “Our deal was for six years.”

“Yes, and your deal with Tennyson added six more. I’m not understanding the problem.”

Finally, emotion flows through her. “I. Hate. You.”

She says the words slowly, like I couldn’t understand them in a normal rhythm. “You think I betrayed you, and you’re punishing me for six years as your wife.”

I nod. “I’m not confused about our arrangement. Are you?”

Something like shock passes over her face. “Why would you let your brother add six more years when you knew he would never kill that guy? Why punish yourself?”

That’s a good question, but not one I’m ready to answer.

I want to punish her, sure, but I also want to tie her to the bedpost and fuck her so hard that her screams border on agony.
