“I don’t. The first thing I did was swing around back to pick up you guys, assuming that would be your emergency course of action. My men and I have no authority to go inside with weapons. The team is waiting for my instruction.”

“Let’s take a look inside,” the agent said, grabbing the door handle. “I don’t want a gunfight with innocents getting hurt.”

“I want to help,” Max said quickly. “I’m experienced with a firearm.”

“Sorry, I’m all out of guns,” Agent Perez said sarcastically.

Gia cleared her throat. As they turned toward her, she was holding a .9 mm pistol.

“Mamma. For Christ’s sake.”

Agent Perez rolled his eyes.

“What?” she shrugged. “I’m a senile old woman. I didn’t know it was against the law.” Then she handed the weapon to Max. Taking the clerk’s hand, Gia pulled her out of the car. “I’ll find your men myself, Sam. Run like the wind, dear.” And the women took off.

“Well, hell,” Perez said under his breath. Then he turned to Max. “Do not use that firearm!”

Chapter Forty-Four

Finding the dead men in the black sedan was a shock. Morgan knew in her heart they were Enzo Fontana’s men. What she couldn’t understand was how her outlaw father had gotten the best of such a sophisticated and powerful man.

“Never underestimate nobody, Chip. Especially a highly motivated opponent. People are rarely what they seem. No matter what you think you know about someone, there is always something you don’t. That’s what’ll get ya,” Pops warned. It turned out to be the most important Popsism of all, Morgan thought with newfound appreciation.

Pops knew this day would come. It was why he trained her to take care of herself and always be vigilant. She felt bad for resenting his paranoia and blaming him for her inability to have a normal childhood. He had isolated her. Engrained a mistrust so deep in her psyche that she had never been able to develop a meaningful relationship with the men she dated. Now, she fully understood why. He had always known her father would come for her. To punish her for what Pops had done all those years ago. Put him in prison. Stolen his child.

Asa Kline was here, and she wasn’t going to shy away from him. Her presence had jeopardized the people she cared about. She would do everything in her power to make sure no one got hurt.

“T…that’s one of Sam’s SUVs parked up ahead,” Bash said.

Picking up their pace, they reached the vehicle within seconds. The driver’s window rolled down, and a voice called out, “Get in the back.” Morgan pulled the door open, and they slid inside.

“We heard you guys decided to come along for the ride,” Riley chuckled from the driver’s seat. Morgan had met the muscular, dark-skin man earlier that morning at breakfast.

The man in the passenger seat turned around to greet them. “Sam told us to keep an eye out for you guys. I’m Flip…short for nothing remotely related,” the blond man with brown laughing eyes joked.

“We need t…to get help,” Morgan said between gasps for breath. “There are two dead guys in a car a couple of blocks from here. Probably Enzo Fontana’s men.”

“Whoa. That’s a game changer,” Flip said, putting his hand to his ear. “Did you get that, Sam?”

That’s when Morgan realized they were all wired to communicate on open mics.

“Will do, boss. I’ll let her make the call. … Just say the word,” Flip said. He turned to Morgan. “Sam wants you to call Max and tell him about the bodies. I’m calling the local police for backup.”

“I’ll make the call to Max,” Bash said, punching in his number.

“You need to get out of there now!” Bash screamed into his cell. “I mean right now!”

In a calm voice, Morgan held out her hand and said, “Give me the phone, Bash. Take a breath.” He reluctantly handed it to her.

Morgan filled Max in on finding the dead bodies. When she hung up, there were two conversations going on simultaneously. Flip was talking to the local police while Riley was in a conversation with Sam.

“…Got it. We’ll keep our eyes open. Just give us the word,” Riley said to Sam.

“What’s going on now?” Bash asked anxiously.

“A black van just pulled up front and let two armed guys out…” Riley stopped mid-sentence and pointed out the front window. “There’s the van exiting the parking lot.”

Morgan rolled down her window to get a better look.
