I called her again, and she didn't pick up, and by the time I walked in, I was fuming.

It was made worse by the fact I also didn't see her at her desk, but what I did see was her phone and my missed calls.

I turned toward my secretary, Larry, and he seemed to instantly understand what I wanted.

"We didn't have the cream that she wanted on this floor, so she went down to the lower floors."

I didn't even want to understand what any of that meant, so I just turned around and went into my office.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door, but I didn't respond.

However, to my surprise, it came again, and I was forced to look up from my desk. She never knocked. And more importantly, when she did, which was only when I had company, she knew to come in immediately. She had access to all aspects of my life.

The knock came again, and I got even more mad. Eventually, I was forced to respond before I was driven crazy by the distraction.

"Come in," I said, and the door was pushed open.

She was gorgeous.

This was the first thought that crossed my head, and it startled me so much that I was lost and caught staring at her until she arrived before my desk. She had on a leather high-waisted dark skirt with a jacket over it. However, the buttons were open, so it was quite difficult not to notice the full swell of her breasts peeking out from the top. And then her lips were a bright red.

In all the years I had worked with her, I realized now I couldn't even recall if she had worn makeup. But now, the all-black attire, dark hair, and red lips made it impossible to look away. Something had to have happened between the previous day and today. She almost seemed like a different person, yet not at the same time.

She seemed a little startled at my outright gaze, and only when she lowered hers did I realize what I was doing.

"What is it?" I asked a bit more hostile than usual.

What I didn't expect, however, was the slight anger that flashed in her eyes, and once again, I was taken aback. She'd never had any look of defiance with me, and this was one of the reasons why I had felt so safe with her over the past years. She did her work well; she was a bit shy and just generally soft enough for me to let my guard down.

Now, however, as I gazed at the annoyance in the brow of the woman before me, I wondered again if I was looking at a completely different person.

"What is it?" I asked again, and she gave me a very strained smile that I most definitely did not recognize.

"You asked for me earlier? Larry said you asked where I'd gone."

"This was true. Michael isn't aware that we're heading to the panel soon?" I asked, and she went still. I watched the sudden alarm that came into her eyes. "You are aware?" I asked.

Usually, I would continue with my work, not even bothering to look at her, but now it was as though I was studying her every move.

She cleared her throat, and I understood instantly that she was about to cook up some lie.

"Um... I'm aware," she stuttered.

"Then why isn't he?"

"He probably just forgot," she said, and I narrowed my gaze at her. Shaking my head, I returned my attention back to work. I had wanted him to fetch me some food before I had to go for the panel, but now I had no interest in eating, so I remained silent as she exited the office.

Chapter 6

Scarlett

Ihad quite a few less-than-polite words I wanted to send Sophie's way the moment I returned to her desk, or rather my desk now. However, when I returned and tried to call her, she didn't pick up. She had fallen asleep in the living room, watching movies to take her mind off her woes, but I was certain that she should be up by now. She hadn't drunk any alcohol besides ordering a huge batch of junk food the previous night. Still, it wasn't enough reason to be in a stupor.

And so, I called and called until eventually, she answered the call.

I was pissed.

"Miss Ma'am," I began my complaint with a lowered tone so that the secretary Larry from across the room wouldn't hear me. "I'm going to need you to be on call and available at all times. It's my first day, and anything could go wrong."
